Rather like St Romain, many a fine Meursault producer has a few vines up in Auxey Duresses, producing both reds and whites. The name Duresses implies a certain degree of hardness which couldn’t be further from the truth, particularly with Matrot’s wines. Here you get a classic, ethereal red Burgundy with archetypal Pinot Noir flavours at a fraction of the price of other appellations. Seriously ageworthy in top vintages, seriously drinkable in every vintage.
