Tasting this blind in the first instance, there was total agreement in the office – a well made Burgundy – which in fact comes from New Zealand’s South Island! Superb stylish red berry fruit on the nose, fresh and pure, with a fine zip of tannin to balance the beautifully rounded fruit.
"Cellaring a juicy, Kiwi pinot noir with lots of delicious, sweet, young, plummy, beetrooty fruit does make sense. With age, all sorts of fine, complex, smoky, gamey flavours will pop up as that vibrant beetrooty fruit fades. Waipara, between Christchurch and Blenheim, is, with the top-drawer Central Otago, a South Island pinot noir source to watch." Jane MacQuitty, The Times, 31st October 2009
"This Pinot slapped down its Burgundian competitors at this tasting and then ground their noses into the dust. It is ready to drink but will age 5+ years with dark fruit aromas and a savoury streak. The palate manages to pull off a fleshy supple feel yet still boasts a firm spine of tannin that doesn't intrude. It's good quality, fruity and zippy with a mouthwatering finish - a pleasing glass of proper Pinot." 92/100, www.thewinegang.com (tasted in September 2009).
