Just as the Pinotage from Springfontein provides a benchmark for the varietal, so does the Ulumbaza Shiraz, densely fruited with notes of new leather, spice and tar, this is drinking beautifully now with some lovely secondary flavours of cigar box and musk, and will carry on evolving for ages to come.
"This wine has upfront savoury spiciness backed by bright black fruit aromas and integrated oak giving some complexity. To drink there is good balance between ripe fruit, minerality and earthy spice combining with the oak and a long finish with fine tannins. It certainly says South Africa but has cool climate influences and would be great with marinated steak or venison." Henry Rymill, The Spectator Magazine.
"Mulberry and leafy aromas with a waft of perfume and almond complexity. Bodes well! The palate, though fruity, has very harsh acidity and it feels out of whack with the fruit - searingly so." The Wine Gang.
"Springfontein’s 2005 Ulumbaza is 100% Shiraz, and like all of their reds I tasted, raised in barriques. Scents of blackberry and cassis mingle with fennel and green peppercorn on the nose. In the mouth, pure, tart black currant is spiced with pepper and cinnamon, and there is a satisfying juicy freshness, but vegetal notes harmonize less successfully than they do in the estate’s Cabernet-based flagship (see below). The sappy, clean finish may gain further complexity if one follows this wine for another couple of years, although the tannins are quite refined and savory." Robert Parker, E-RobertParker.com
