House & Garden Gourmet December

Joanna Simon’s mouth-watering Gourmet supplement in House & Garden (December 2011) is packed with fabulous ideas for Christmas, including recipes, kitchen gadgets, foodie gifts, artisan foods and, of course, scrumptious wines.

First up is our Legras & Hass Tradition NV, “a delightful, lemony, Chardonnay-influenced Champagne from a family based in the grand cru village of Chouilly” – a perfect way to start the celebrations off.

For turkey and goose, Joanna prefers red wine but points out that “it’s the accompaniments that can be tricky. Sweet and/or sharp sauces and stuffings – cranberry, apple, orange, prunes and so on – make bone-dry wines, tannic reds, low-acid whites and subtle or neutral wines taste thinner and tarter, Similarly, the sweetness of chestnuts can overpower dry, medium-bodied wines.” For a “full-bodied white with plenty of flavour” Joanna recommends Springfontein Estate Terroir Selection Chenin Blanc 2010.

And alongside a recipe for a superb sounding Steak en croute with red wine sauce (which, incidentally, looks easy to make but very impressive) Joanna says “the combination of steak and mushrooms can be matched to a wide variety of medium- to fairly full-bodied reds… This claret is very good value: Bordeaux Hubert de Boüard 2004."

This Gourmet supplement is a brilliant one-stop-shop for your Christmas recipes and wines and comes highly recommended by us. Thank you Joanna!
