Top wine estates in all but name

Jonathan Ray chooses some classy clarets in his Telegraph column (Saturday 16th January 2010).

"There are some fine clarets to be had for those wily enough to read between the lines..." says Jonathan Ray in his article highlighting the lesser wines of great estates and great the value that can be found by the canny buyer. His advice is "to seek them out by keeping your eyes peeled and your ears skinned."

Private Cellar's Amanda Skinner is also quoted in the article, saying "I don't really understand why the Bordelais are so concerned over their de-classified wines being marketed as such. I would have thought that if they can create a new market through selling their de-classified wines to a merchant who markets them successfully on an annual basis that it can only be a good thing."

Jonathan continues "It's certainly a good thing for the customer, who gets approachable wine from major estates at an approachable price. Nobody is suggesting that these wines are the same quality as the grand vins, but they boast the same winemaking pedigree."

Jonathan's favourite clarets from great estates include:

2005 JP Moueix Bordeaux Supérieur - "Cracking value made under the supervision of Christian Moueix from bought grapes".
