Two more wines in the Times Top 100
Top UK wine writer, Jane MacQuitty, was impressed enough by two more of our Private Cellar wines to include them in her Times Top 100 wines of Summer 2009...
Jane tastes literally hundreds of wines for this series so the competition is very stiff. Congratulations to The Songlines Estate and FrédéricMagnien for their inclusion in this illustrious list.
2007 Leylines, McLaren Vale Shiraz, Songlines Estates, Australia
I took time to warm up to the Songlines Estates’ wines owing to the astonishing spend and razzmatazz surrounding their launch. Needless fretting, as the wines made from the finest McLaren Vale fruit are serious, limited-edition stuff. This gorgeous, creamy, spicy, blackberry, pepper and chocolate-laced 14.5 per cent whopper is another top-notch barbecue red.
2006 Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Frédéric Magnien, France
Scooping up a humble bourgogne blanc, or rouge, from a good producer and a top year can add up to great value for money drinking. As a negociant, or merchant, based in the northern Côte d’Or in Morey St Denis, Frédéric Magnien is renowned for his fruit-led wines just like this delicious ’06. Lap up this sweet, ripe, zesty, damson plum fruit-charged red burgundy, with a touch of leather and chocolate spice on the finish, before everyone else does.
