Intense dusty black fruits on the palate, concentrated, tarry and spiced, with tannins so masked as to scarcely merit a mention in my note. Long, sustained finish, this is a really lovely wine. | Château les Astéries, Grand Cru St Emilion Formerly belonging to Fonroque, the vineyards of les Astéries have a bed of solid limestone (astéries) which give this wine a tight, linear quality. Dense purple black in colour, with intense, perfumed red and black fruits with spiced new wood behind on the nose, the palate is very taut, with massive black fruits, with floral and cedar notes, reined-in but with lovely power behind. | Château Guillot Clauzel, Pomerol A tiny, one hectare estate which rubs boundaries with Le Pin, Guillot Clauzel is managed by Dominique Thienpont of Vieux Château Certan, with the wine made by François Despagne of Grand Corbin Despagne. Despite this illustrious scene-setting, the property remains virtually unknown. Production is annually between 15 and 20 barrels – in other words, a maximum of 500 cases. In 2009 the wine is deep red black with lovely plummy Merlot notes on the nose, tarry and spiced, with a good degree of minerality. On the palate broad, ripe tannins underpin the fruit, with the fresh, vibrant fruit coming through clearly. Long, rich and complex. A junior version of Le Pin at a fraction of the price. From 2016 |
