The Leflaive family have been land owners in Puligny Montrachet since the 1700s and the estate today, under the guardianship of Anne-Claude Leflaive undoubtedly fully deserves its ranking amongst the greatest white wine estates in the world.

It was Anne-Claude’s grandfather, Joseph Leflaive, who started to bring the family Domaine to life in the 1920s. With the help of François Virot, acting as estate manager, he analysed each parcel of land and started a programme of re-planting and buying prime vineyards when he could. At the time, the grapes were sold to local négociants but during Joseph’s tenure, the estate started to bottle under its own label and to build up its own clientele.

Anne-Claude’s father, Vincent, and uncle, Jo, took over the Domaine, in 1953, with Vincent taking on the responsibility of vineyard management, wine-making and sales. It was under his leadership that the Domaine made its name internationally and Anne-Claude joined him in 1990, taking over the management after his death in 1993.

Anne-Claude has truly made her mark on the Domaine with the introduction of bio-dynamic practices. Her vision has been to reverse the negative effects of weed killers and chemical fertilisers on the soil structure through bio-dynamism. She started trials in 1990 and, with the support of her team, went fully bio-dynamic from 1998. You don’t need to be an expert to see the benefits in the vineyard; the soil is living and breathing and the vines and leaves look healthier and that reflects in the wines which have a greater complexity and purity of expression than ever before.
