Every year, I find that I can set my baseline for the vintage after tasting from the Moueix stable; this is where the final piece in a complicated vintage puzzle falls into place. There is such a proliferation of techniques employed elsewhere that the main characteristics of the vintage, and even the grapes, can be totally obscured by science, leaving us less enlightened than when we started. Christian Moueix has always said that Jean-Pierre Moueix aim to produce the best wines possible, reflecting both the terroir and the vintage, and in 2014 they have certainly done this with some fabulously silky, intense yet fresh wines. None have the voluptuousness associated with years like 2005 or 2009, yet they have a completeness and fresh tranquillity about them which will win them many friends. These are wines for the mid-term plus, needing some time for the tannins and acidity to fully integrate, although with their delicious fruit profile they will appeal relatively early.

2014 was a far from simple year, which started optimistically with an early budburst and warm temperatures, followed by some pretty terrible weather throughout the main summer months, with July and most of August wet and cool, requiring a huge amount of work in the vineyard from leaf plucking to green harvesting.* Around 20th August the weather changed, with sunny days and cool nights lasting right into November, allowing the remaining grapes to finally ripen fully. Harvesting for the Moueix wines began in earnest in late September in Pomerol and in early October in St Emilion, much later than normal, and although they used optical sorters to help the selection, in the end they only needed to remove around 4% of the harvested crop because the fruit was so healthy. Edouard Moueix was particularly pleased with the rounded, supple tannins in their wines, something we definitely did not find repeated in all our tastings in the region.
