Margaux
Alter Ego de Château Palmer, Margaux 2016 (6 per case)
Price in 2010: £263; price in 2015: £238
40% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot
Incredibly deep, dense, purple black, inky. The nose is initially savoury before crushed black-skinned fruits - sloe, mulberry – come to the fore, almost over ripe and creamed. On the palate, cool, primary black fruit is much fresher than the nose suggests, sweet and almost tarry, with substantial, smooth tannins, ripe and supple, spiced in the background and leading to a long finish with a lovely savoury twist. Drink 2025-2040+

50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 12% Petit Verdot
Vibrant red black, not opaque, with a nose of sappy cool black fruits, sweet and ripe, leading to a deliciously plump palate of red and black fruits, spicy and rounded with creamed red berries, some crème pâtissière and vanilla – a really elegant, edible wine. Delicious, juicy and long on the finish. Always good value. Drink 2021-2030+

Blason d’Issan, Margaux 2016
Price in 2015: £180
40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 60% Merlot
55% of the harvest
Blason is perhaps not a true second wine but a wine in its own right as it comes from the young vines of a single clos at d'Issan rather than a selection from the whole production. Most of the young vines are Merlot but with more Cabernet Sauvignon coming on stream, the blend will start to subtly change. A gorgeously fresh, open nose of crushed black fruits, very primary and rich with almost sweet blackcurrant fruit, a light touch of hay and a savoury note too. Fresh also on the palate, with black berry fruit and some rich back notes, the textured tannins giving a lovely mouth-feel going to a satisfying, savoury finish. Drink 2020-2025

£225

Château Boyd Cantenac, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux 2016
Price in 2015: £320
"This is concentrated and intense, its ageing potential and ambition on show here with a tight fruit structure. It has some glossy elements to it and a clear oak influence, although it's not overpowering. This stands up well to its classified peers in the appellation, and showcases the signature spice of Boyd-Cantenac from its high proportion of Petit Verdot (7%) and Cabernet Franc (7%). The rest of the blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Merlot. Drinking Window 2027-2042" Jane Anson, Decanter.com

Deep red black, with a nose of succulent black fruit, juicy and intense with some tarry notes too, leading to a sweet, ripe, mouth-coating palate of deliciously juicy black fruits, rich, tarry, spiced, layered, really elegant with substantial but not massive tannins behind, toasty with hint of new car leather. Sweet and rich on the long, evolving finish. Really good effort. Drink 2028-2040

Château Cantenac Brown, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux 2016
Price in 2015: £355
Dense purple black to the rim, semi-opaque, with a nose of savoury black fruit, some cedar and mulberry, with fresh black fruits and spice leading to a palate of big black fruits, obvious new wood notes, fresh and savoury with substantial tannins on the palate, ripe but quite extracted, going to a long, impressive finish. Drying but spiced, this will develop well. Drink 2026-2040

Price in 2010: £570; price in 2015: £420
64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot
45% of the harvest
Deep red black, less opaque than other wines from this appellation, with a nose of creamed black fruits – blackcurrant – very primary and lightly spiced (cumin notes). On the palate the creamed black fruits are again very primary and fresh, lightly spiced with some grilled notes and a satisfying richness behind, there are savoury notes too and substantial but supple tannins going to a long and incredibly fresh finish. Lovely wine. Drink 2029-2045

Château Kirwan, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux 2016

£370
Château Malescot St Exupéry, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux 2016
Deep red black but not opaque with a nose of savoury black skinned fruit, dusty and spiced, oak spice too, mulberry, leading to a palate of deep black fruit, intense, sweet and ripe, big tannins but not over extracted this year for the first time, sweet and spiced, some drying on the end. Long and sweet on the finish. Really good result and not OTT as it has been in years gone by. Drink 2027-2050

£500
Château Margaux, 1er Cru Classé Margaux 2016 (6 per case)
Price in 2015: £2,130
94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot; 28% of the harvest
Rigorous selection was made in the vineyard and cellar in 2016 as the Margaux team wanted to match the fabulous quality of the 2015 vintage. Incredibly deep, dark and opaque with a stalky, fumey nose of black fruits, light blackcurrant and distant spice but very tight, cool fruit. On the palate, huge black fruit on entry, spiced, with a very distant grilled note, the blackcurrant fruit very obvious but in an old world style with a mineral structure behind, the tannins ripe, supple and integrated going to a fresh, sweet, long and evolving finish, really persistent. Drink 2027-2050

Château Palmer, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux 2016 (6 per case)
Price in 2015: £1,125
47% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot
Dense, deep opaque to the rim with a nose of sweet, crushed black fruits, very primary, almost creamed, raw blackcurrants with a fresh leafy note too, perfumed, leading to a smooth palate of black fruits on entry, deceptively smooth, with fresh blackcurrant notes and big texture and tannins behind, creamy, spiced. Tannins are substantial but balanced by the fruit; with a long, oriental spice finish, with even a hint of incense. Stunning wine. Described by Thomas Duroux, winemaker for the past 10 years, as the most sophisticated Palmer he has ever made… Drink 2026 – 2045+
