Pessac-Léognan
Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Pessac-Léognan 2016
Price in 2010: £580; price in 2015: £470
65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot
Deep, vibrant, dark red, semi-opaque with a gorgeously approachable nose of black fruit, mulberry, loganberry, some cedar and spice, fresh and creamed too. On the palate, huge black fruit on entry, a saline note, rich, mineral, creamed black fruits, massive but very ripe tannins hiding behind the fruit, perfumed and semi-exotic, going to a long, grilled, rich finish. LONG!! Fab. Drink 2026-2050

£635

La Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion 2016
36.5% Merlot, 21.5% Cabernet Franc, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon
Harvested 19th September - 14th October
Deep, intense purple black, gorgeously tarry, cedary and rich on the nose with notes of black cherry, sweet and plump smelling, leading to a substantial palate of big red and black fruit, intense, sweet and layered, with some smoky oak behind and really fresh acidity, the ripe tannins totally masked by fruit, to a sweet, tarry, spiced and almost savoury finish with some grilled oak notes on the end.

Le Clarence de Haut Brion, Pessac-Léognan 2016 (6 per case)
51.3% Merlot, 13.1% Cabernet Franc, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.6% Petit Verdot
Harvested 19th September - 13th October
Very deep purple black, semi-opaque (nearly opaque) with a nose of substantial blackcurrant fruit, very primary and less evolved than Chapelle, some fumey too leading to a palate of gorgeous creamed, smoky black fruit, sweet and rich yet linear and fresh too, incredibly taut, with big, ripe tannins almost entirely masked by the fruit, sweet and intense, with a long, perfumed finish. Not opulent, and less so than Chapelle, but really elegant and powerful.

Château Haut Brion, 1er Cru Classé, Pessac Léognan 2016 (6 per case)
Price in 2015: £2,130
56% Merlot, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, 37.5% Cabernet Sauvignon
Harvested 19th September - 13th October
Deep red black not purple, dense, opaque, with a very tight nose of black fruits, restrained with little given away at this stage. On the palate, intense, dense, rich black fruits, tight as can be, particularly given the flamboyance of La Mission, intense, spiced and dark, a truly stunning wine but much tighter again on the finish, long and evolving but giving nothing away at present. Spice and musk envelop the huge ripe tannins; the wine is broad behind but so linear at the moment. Cool precision.

Château La Mission Haut Brion, Pessac Léognan 2016 (6 per case)
Price in 2015: 1,600
57.5% Merlot, 42.5% Cabernet Sauvignon
Harvested 19th September - 14th October
Deep, deep purple black with an extraordinarily rich and flamboyant nose of cedar, grilled red and black fruits and wood spice, really gorgeous with some musky, almost liquorice notes too, very concentrated. On the palate there is a huge concentration of black fruit, again spice and liquorice, grilled, coffee notes, deliciously rich and mouth-coating but not in a sweet or cloying way thanks to the massive ripe tannins and intense spice and fabulous concentration on the very long finish. Truly Wow!
