Les Côtes
Château d'Aiguilhe, AOC Castillon 2017
Possibly one of the most undervalued wines on the market. Deep purple to the rim, semi opaque with a nose of creamed black fruits, blackcurrant, some tar and new wood too, vibrant. On the palate delicious black fruits, crushed blackberry and blackcurrant, with almost citrus acidity, big supple tannins and a nice leafy bite, very approachable, floral with mid weight and length, then really long on the finish. Yum! Drink 2023 - 2033
Château Carignan, Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux 2017
Dense purple black right to the rim, really deep, with a nose of brambly black fruit, very rich and intense, some vanilla and spice, creamed dark skinned fruit. On the palate sweet black fruit, rich and toasty, quite smooth and sleek on the mid palate, with good acidity behind and good rich fruit, more substantial than previous vintages with a long, fruity finish. Drink 2023 - 2030

Château Carignan Prima, Côtes de Bordeaux Cadillac 2017
100% Merlot every year, selected from the best parts of the vineyards on the estate, Prima is the grand vin of Château Carignan (see above).
Deep dense red black, opaque to the rim, with a hugely oaky, toasty nose of black fruits, saline and savoury; rich on the palate, with brambly black fruits and massive tannins behind, savoury again with hint of spice, tight and intense, building up to a finish which is better than the start, always a good sign. Really good and intense. Drink 2024 - 2031+
Château Clos Puy Arnaud, Côtes de Castillon 2017
Dense opaque black right to the rim with a nose of creamed, tight black fruits, in need of airing to reveal its true potential. Intense black fruit on the palate, big construction, really tight and intense, this is a lovely wine. Drink 2025 - 2035
Clos Fontaine, Côtes de Francs 2017
Deep dense black red, semi opaque with a lovely nose of wild red and black fruits, rich and supple, fruity and slightly obvious but deliciously appealing; on the palate rich spiced fruits combine with cinnamon and star anise, fresh and delicious to a bone dry finish. Drink 2021-2028

Domaine de Cambes, Bordeaux 2017
80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc
Gorgeously toasty rich nose, with notes of black and red fruits overlaid by cedar, crème pâtissière, mulberry and loganberry. Less lush than usual on the palate and although the rich fruits are there it is not as plump (yet) as the nose implies, toasty with a leafy green line down the middle from the Cabernet Franc, going to a long, spiced finish with really smooth, supple tannins behind. Drink 2021 - 2030

Montlandrie, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux 2017
75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon; 40% new oak
Deep but not opaque red black with a nose of stony black fruit, very different from the other Durantou wines; tight and inky, not generous but offering hints of more to come. On the palate the black fruit is rich and intense with new wood and spice, rich and substantial with a big tannic backbone; long on the finish, a touch raw at present but with so much sweetness behind, Drink 2024 - 2035
Roc de Cambes, Côtes de Bourg 2017 - SOLD OUT
85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon; 100% new oak
Very deep in colour with a rich toasty nose with hints of coffee, dense and sweet, with mulberry and black cherry fruit behind. On the palate rich, dense and intense again, with a big fresh structure, racy acidity and very ripe, supple tannins behind, spiced and tarry notes contrasting with the vibrant fresh fruits, an unusual combination. A truly stunning wine with a massively long finish which grows and evolves. Drink 2024 - 2034

Médoc and Haut-Médoc
Château Beaumont, Haut Médoc 2017
Dense purple black to the rim with a nose of sweet black fruit, a hint of blackcurrant, cool with some savoury, earthy and pine notes too. On the palate sweet black fruit, rich and concentrated, some grappa notes but with good, solid, ripe tannins behind, much more solid than usual but with all the right elements and the acidity is in check.
Château Cap de Haut, Haut Médoc 2017
71% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot
Dense red black right to the rim with phenomenal nose of glycerine black fruits, new wood, grilled, toasty, savoury and musky too. On the palate the new wood overwhelms initially but there is substantial black fruit behind and lots of sweetness too, the tannins very soft and supple, rich and dense with a floral note and a hint of black China tea. Great value.
Château Cantemerle, Grand Cru Classé Haut-Médoc 2017
We tasted this wine several times and at each tasting it showed better. Deep purple black with a nose of black fruits, sweet and spiced with good depth going to a palate of massive, concentrated juicy black fruits with substantial but ripe tannins, really well handled, a mineral touch and a distant grilled note. This needs time to meld but has all the right ingredients.

Château Cissac, Haut Médoc 2017
Château La Lagune, 3ème Cru Classé Haut- Médoc 2017
Deep purple black with a nose of dense fumey blackcurrant fruit, savoury and chalky with creamed black skins, really concentrated on the nose; very reduced on the palate with quite tight and intense black fruit, a palate of big tannins, intense, rich and dense – would like to try again in a few months’ time to work out where it is going. Drink 2024 - 2032+

Goulée de Cos d'Estournel, Médoc 2017
72% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc; 30% new oak
Deep red black, semi-opaque to the rim with a lovely nose of soured black fruits, floral and crunchy, sweet and ripe; on the palate, really soft and supple black fruits, easy access, fresh and ripe with the new wood quite marked but not unpleasant going to a juicy, fresh and perfumed finish with good weight.
Château Potensac, Médoc 2017
47% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot
30% new oak
Deep purple red to the rim with a nose of really intense Cabernet fruit, blackcurrant, some dusty black skins, mineral notes and leafy too. On the palate rich sweet black fruit, blackcurrant pastilles, layered with soft, supple tannins and good length. Really good for Potensac, one of best for some time. Drink 2023-2032
Château Sociando Mallet, Haut-Médoc 2017
Big black fruit on the nose, some smooth and creamy notes and a green twist going to a toasty palate, sweet and fresh too, nicely done, with a move away from primary fruit.
Château Vieux Robin, Médoc 2017
Deep but not dense or opaque with sweet red and black fruits on the nose, some red jam notes and fresh, light red berry fruit on the palate underlined by fine oak. Fresh and vibrant, clean and well made, this should offer good value for money.
Moulis & Listrac
Château Chasse Spleen, Moulis en Médoc 2017
Deep but not opaque with a nose of soft, supple black fruits, creamed and grilled, alluring, leading to a supple palate of blackcurrant fruit before substantial extract comes through with some grilled notes, poised and intense. Drink 2022-2034
Château Mauvesin Barton, Moulis en Médoc 2017

Château Poujeaux, Moulis en Médoc 2017
Deep, semi-opaque black red with a nose of big black fruits, some port-like notes, lightly grilled and almost tobacco tones, leading to a palate of sweet black fruit, very intense and constructed, fresh too, with big ripe tannins behind, less of a caricature than normal, with some good acidity. Fresh and crunchy on the finish, very nicely done. Drink 2023 - 2030
Château La Tour de By, Médoc 2017
Deep red black with nose of grippy black fruit, raw wood and some sappy and juicy notes. The palate is light on entry, with some sappy, primary blackcurrant fruit, nicely done but a little short on the finish.
