Les Côtes
Château d'Aiguilhe, AOC Castillon 2017
Possibly one of the most undervalued wines on the market. Deep purple to the rim, semi opaque with a nose of creamed black fruits, blackcurrant, some tar and new wood too, vibrant. On the palate delicious black fruits, crushed blackberry and blackcurrant, with almost citrus acidity, big supple tannins and a nice leafy bite, very approachable, floral with mid weight and length, then really long on the finish. Yum! Drink 2023 - 2033

Château Carignan Prima, Côtes de Bordeaux Cadillac 2017
100% Merlot every year, selected from the best parts of the vineyards on the estate, Prima is the grand vin of Château Carignan (see above).
Deep dense red black, opaque to the rim, with a hugely oaky, toasty nose of black fruits, saline and savoury; rich on the palate, with brambly black fruits and massive tannins behind, savoury again with hint of spice, tight and intense, building up to a finish which is better than the start, always a good sign. Really good and intense. Drink 2024 - 2031+

£150
Château Clos Puy Arnaud, Côtes de Castillon 2017
Dense opaque black right to the rim with a nose of creamed, tight black fruits, in need of airing to reveal its true potential. Intense black fruit on the palate, big construction, really tight and intense, this is a lovely wine. Drink 2025 - 2035

Domaine de Cambes, Bordeaux 2017
80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc
Gorgeously toasty rich nose, with notes of black and red fruits overlaid by cedar, crème pâtissière, mulberry and loganberry. Less lush than usual on the palate and although the rich fruits are there it is not as plump (yet) as the nose implies, toasty with a leafy green line down the middle from the Cabernet Franc, going to a long, spiced finish with really smooth, supple tannins behind. Drink 2021 - 2030

£175

Montlandrie, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux 2017
75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon; 40% new oak
Deep but not opaque red black with a nose of stony black fruit, very different from the other Durantou wines; tight and inky, not generous but offering hints of more to come. On the palate the black fruit is rich and intense with new wood and spice, rich and substantial with a big tannic backbone; long on the finish, a touch raw at present but with so much sweetness behind, Drink 2024 - 2035

£175
Roc de Cambes, Côtes de Bourg 2017 - SOLD OUT
85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon; 100% new oak
Very deep in colour with a rich toasty nose with hints of coffee, dense and sweet, with mulberry and black cherry fruit behind. On the palate rich, dense and intense again, with a big fresh structure, racy acidity and very ripe, supple tannins behind, spiced and tarry notes contrasting with the vibrant fresh fruits, an unusual combination. A truly stunning wine with a massively long finish which grows and evolves. Drink 2024 - 2034

Médoc and Haut-Médoc
Château Beaumont, Haut Médoc 2017
Dense purple black to the rim with a nose of sweet black fruit, a hint of blackcurrant, cool with some savoury, earthy and pine notes too. On the palate sweet black fruit, rich and concentrated, some grappa notes but with good, solid, ripe tannins behind, much more solid than usual but with all the right elements and the acidity is in check.

£110
Château Cap de Haut, Haut Médoc 2017
71% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot
Dense red black right to the rim with phenomenal nose of glycerine black fruits, new wood, grilled, toasty, savoury and musky too. On the palate the new wood overwhelms initially but there is substantial black fruit behind and lots of sweetness too, the tannins very soft and supple, rich and dense with a floral note and a hint of black China tea. Great value.

£110
Château Cantemerle, Grand Cru Classé Haut-Médoc 2017
We tasted this wine several times and at each tasting it showed better. Deep purple black with a nose of black fruits, sweet and spiced with good depth going to a palate of massive, concentrated juicy black fruits with substantial but ripe tannins, really well handled, a mineral touch and a distant grilled note. This needs time to meld but has all the right ingredients.
