Margaux
Alter Ego de Château Palmer, Margaux 2017
53% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot
Deep red black right to the rim, semi opaque, with a nose of perfumed, sappy wood with creamed black fruit too; slightly savoury. Mineral, tight black fruits on the palate, there’s some sweetness too but the wine is wonderfully restrained with fresh fruit and super-ripe and supple tannins, not invasive at all going to a long, savoury finish.

Blason d’Issan, Margaux 2017 - top pick!
60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot
Red black not opaque with a nose of red fruits with black fruits behind, cool and fresh, leading to a very cool palate of poised red and black fruits, little wood influence showing at this stage, fresh, with big ripe tannins behind, pretty but perhaps less overt than usual, very pure and mineral to a long finish. Drink 2025 - 2035

Château Boyd Cantenac, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux 2017
not tasted

£368

Brane Cantenac, 2ème Cru Classé Margaux 2017
Deep red black, semi opaque with a nose of rich red cherry and black fruit, some spice, with a palate of sweet black fruit with good intensity, fresh and vibrant, some grilled fruit with deliciously ripe tannins for structure and nice depth to a long, grilled finish. Really nice wine. Drink 2027-2037

£576

Château Cantenac Brown, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux 2017
Vibrant limpid red black with a nose of fumey black fruit and concentrated black jelly notes with a soft, gentle palate of ripe black fruit, with big tannins. Lacking some depth in the mid-palate but quite a pretty wine.

£428
Château Giscours, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux 2017
Limpid red black with a nose of mineral black fruit, vibrant and alluring on the nose with some savoury notes too. On the palate sweet black fruit, with a slight dip in the middle but there are big ripe tannins, supple and succulent, and a nice sweetness of fruit, lightly grilled and really well done, distinctive and delicious. Drink 2027-2038

£510

Château d’Issan, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux 2017 - top pick!
65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot
Deep red black but not opaque, with a nose of soft creamed red fruits, fresh and vibrant, with a smooth, creamed palate of black fruits, lightly perfumed and rich but not explosive, with lovely supple tannins, really characterful, not overt but with lovely length and poise to a long, firm finish. Delicious. Drink 2027-2039

£514

Château Kirwan, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux 2017
Tasted from a micro-sample. Limpid red with a nose of sweet black fruit, the tiny sample making it hard to smell. Light red and black fruit on the palate with some floral notes and tight tannins, to a grippy finish.

£380
Château Malescot St Exupéry, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux 2017
Deep semi opaque with a nose of deep red black fruit, some grapey notes, fresh and with lots going on, leading to a substantial palate of black fruits, big extract (too much?) with raw tannins, there is sweetness behind but just too extracted in my opinion.

£430
Château Margaux, 1er Cru Classé Margaux 2017
89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc
Dense red black (not purple) with a spiced, cool nose with capsicum aromas and grilled hint behind, very restrained. The palate is gorgeously plump in comparison, still restrained amd without huge flesh but with really refined, the smooth, rich, dense fruit is not showy but really intense, the tannins are tight but ripe and supple and the finish goes on and on. There is power here but in a very subtle way.

Château Marquis de Terme, Margaux 2017
Deep red black not opaque with nose of rich cooked black fruits, supple yet fresh, grilled and really alluring. On the palate substantial black cherry fruit, cool but with tannins behind, perhaps a bit raw at this stage but just enough flesh and fruit to balance out. A good effort.

£370

Château Palmer, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux 2017
54% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot
Dense purple red right to the rim, semi opaque, with a nose of gorgeous sappy black fruit, savoury, inky, perfumed and with distant grilled notes too. Fresh racy red fruits on the palate with big depth of flavour and very little wood influence yet, really juicy and combined, with the really supple, ripe tannins scarcely noticeable; cool and poised right to the finish. Delicious.

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux 2017

36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc
Deep red black not opaque with a nose of sweet, floral red berry fruit; rich and intense on the palate, the black fruit is vibrant and fresh with good acidity, layered with a distant grilled note and smooth but substantial tannins to a long, fresh, racy finish that goes on and on.

£810

Château Rauzan Ségla, 2ème Cru Classé Margaux 2017
Deep red black but not opaque, with a nose of slightly dusty blackcurrant, sweet and fresh, leading to a palate which is surprisingly elegant and almost light, but with lots of fruit and balanced, ripe tannins behind, some spice and good depth, very elegant. This is not a blockbuster but very stylish indeed. Drink 2028-2040+

£648
Château du Tertre, 5ème Cru Classé Margaux 2017
Vibrant red black with a nose of very smoky black fruit, hard to distinguish aromas at this stage, some savoury notes; on the palate substantial black fruit with some sweet notes, fresh and vibrant but still with a smoky back note, with ripe and quite well contained tannins but a hole in the mid-palate before going on to a long, grilled and rich finish. Perhaps this will fill out…
