Pauillac
Carruades de Château Lafite, Pauillac 2017 - sold out
60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc
Deep red black to the rim, not opaque, with a nose of creamed black fruits, fresher on the nose than Duhart with supple black fruits on the palate but hard to find specific flavours at first; some new wood notes and richness with ripe, supple tannins before more flavours develop, savoury notes, black fruits and better layering to a really long finish.

6 per case, sold out

Château Clerc Milon, Pauillac 2017
60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc,
2% Petit Verdot, 1% Carmenère
Deep purple black right to the rim, not quite opaque (and slightly lighter than Armailhac) with a nose of sweet crushed black fruits, creamed and spiced too, really alluring. Deliciously fresh black fruits on the palate, creamed again, spiced too, with really ripe, scarcely noticeable tannins, extremely elegant and well done. Not a blockbuster but really nice wine. Long. Chapeau! Drink 2025 - 2038

£625

Château d'Armailhac, 5ème Cru Classé Pauillac 2017
68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot
Dense purple black, semi opaque, with a nose of concentrated, slightly soured black fruits, mineral, with some green stems, violets and black stone fruit, not rich but with a distant grilled aroma. On the palate, dense and intense, creamed black fruits, really rich and layered with some dark chocolate too, not sweet, with marked acidity and really ripe tannins.  Lovely wine, really long to a sweetly damson-fruited finish. Drink 2023 - 2038

£195

Château Batailley, 5ème Cru Classé Pauillac 2017
Deep purple black with a very tight nose of blackcurrant fruit, spice, some grilled wood and with good depth, leading to a smooth palate on entry, mid weight with good grilled notes, the black fruit perhaps lacks some definition but is appealing nonetheless. The tannins are very supple and the palate remains a touch too fluid right to the end but there is good length.

£
Château Croizet Bages, Pauillac 2017
Deep purple black with a nose of really fresh blackcurrant fruit and blackcurrant pastilles too, creamy and juicy, leading to a palate of cooler, more precise fruit than indicated on the nose, with marked tannins, mostly ripe but perhaps more extracted than other wines (but still a good result for Croizet Bages), some sweet notes too but a touch drying on the long finish.

£295
Echo de Lynch Bages, Pauillac 2017
74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and no new wood
Deepish red black to the rim, semi opaque, with a nose of creamed black fruits, very fresh and perfumed with some mineral too, leading to a full palate of soft, rounded black fruits, again creamed, with a distant grilled note, a real mouthful on first tasting although the weight slims out on the mid palate, fresh and vibrant with supple tannins behind, mid-length but satisfying all the same and the finish grows. Drink 2025-2036

£305

Château Grand Puy Lacoste, 5ème Cru Classé Pauillac 2017
80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot matured in 75% new oak
Deep dense purple black, semi-opaque, with a nose of black fruits, quite tight and closed at this stage with some mineral notes, not creamed, but rich and ripe, leading to a much more supple palate than the nose implies, fresh and ripe with some grilled notes (although very restrained when considering that 75% new wood was used), violets, really toasty, grilled and savoury to a rich, long, layered finish. More interesting than many other wines, delicious and long on the palate and definitely worth a detour. Drink 2028-2038+

£648

Château Haut Batailley, 5ème Cru Classé Pauillac 2017
66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot; 60% new oak
Dense purple black to the rim, semi opaque, with a nose of perfumed black fruit, some spice but not oriental, with fresh black fruits and some distant creamed notes. On the palate austere and substantial black fruit flavours mask the new wood, with creamed and supple tannins behind, very fresh with noticeable acidity and a significantly bigger and bolder wine than previously, very stylish and intense. Mid-length and fresh on the finish. Drink 2025 – 2030+

£495

Lacoste Borie, Pauillac 2017
65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc
Vibrant red black, with a nose of creamy black fruits, sweet and soft, really inviting without being blowsy or fat, perfumed too, leading to a palate of ripe black fruits, creamy and supple, again very alluring, soft with lovely ripe tannins, acidity in check and good depth and body to a long finish of sweet black fruits, not hugely complex but truly delicious. Drink 2025-2032

£222

Château Lafite, 1er Cru Classé Pauillac 2017
96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3.5% Merlot, 0.5% Petit Verdot
Deep dense red black right to the rim, semi opaque, with a nose of black Cabernet fruit, very restrained, tight and mineral, with intense black fruit on the palate, rich, layered with very cool fruit and still really restrained, tight and black. The tannins are hyper supple, although there are lots of them, really fresh acidity too and huge minty Cabernet fruit on the smooth and toasted finish. There is spice and cedar too on the end palate when really worked. Rich and long.

Château Lynch Bages, 5ème Cru Classé Pauillac 2017
70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot, matured in 75% new oak
Deep black, semi opaque to the rim, with a nose of creamed black fruits, really intense, some violets, mineral and rich, really tight yet alluring too; inky. On the palate cool black fruits, very poised and fresh yet with some sweetness too, fresh with very big tannins behind, spiced and almost austere, depth and richness with loads of layers of flavour going on, really good wine, really interesting, sweet and long. Drink 2029-2040

£895

Château Mouton Rothschild, 1er Cru Classé Pauillac 2017
90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot
Deep and dense, on the black spectrum, opaque with a gorgeous nose of crushed damson and mulberry, lightly spiced, some wood notes too but really concentrated, truly exceptional. Dense and concentrated on the palate, layered with textured black fruits, intense and beautifully rich, spiced, ripe and long, a big mouthful but beautifully balanced to a long, spiced, rich, intense finish with some musky notes. Superb. Drink 2030 - 2045

81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc
Dense red black with a nose of white pepper and ripe black fruits, mineral and stony, sweetly spiced, perfumed and really attractive. On the palate the dense black fruits are cool and restrained, with some notable acidity and big, ripe tannins, some strong new wood notes but not overpowering, a hint of orange peel, rich, intense and characterful to a really long finish. Lovely wine. Drink 2027 - 2038

Château Pibran, Pauillac 2017

£280
Château Pichon Baron, 2ème Cru Classé Pauillac 2017
Deep purple black with a lovely nose of savoury black fruit, grilled and mineral, some evolution already, very alluring, rich and with a floral note. Dense and flavoured on the palate, rich and intense with lovely balance; the marked acidity and very big tannins are totally masked by supple, rich fruit and lovely grilled black fruits on the end palate. Delicious and really long and evolving. Drink 2029 - 2040+

£1,176

70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot
Dense purple black, right to the rim with massive black fruit on the nose, stony and mineral with a hint of cacao, really expressive but restrained too, leading to a massively tight palate of denser black fruits, the tannins more marked but ripe, smooth in the mid palate and rich and big, ripe and intense. Seriously structured, this is a big beast of a wine but with elegance and freshness behind. Grilled and rich to a really long, ripe blackcurrant fruited finish. Drink 2028-2040+

On the palate, the rich, dense black fruits are really vibrant, mineral and intense, with massive yet supple tannins, savoury and almost meaty yet fresh and incredibly layered, sweet, floral and rich.
