Pessac-Léognan
Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Pessac-Léognan 2017
Deep purple black, semi opaque; on the nose gorgeously spiced toasty black fruits, grilled and rich, really alluring, violets, floral; the palate has substantial fruit and an orange peel note, rich and fresh with big but ripe and supple tannins, lovely intensity and well balanced right to the end. Drink 2023 - 2033+

£520

La Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion 2017
49.2% Merlot, 8.9% Cabernet Franc, 41.9% Cabernet Sauvignon
Deep red black right to the rim, vibrant, with a nose of lovely soured black fruits, creamed and fresh, sweet and succulent, with some grilled tarry notes. Deliciously fresh, juicy, crunchy black fruits on the palate, primary and beautifully poised, with some firmer tannins behind, some spice and quite marked acidity too, but with really good depth, freshness and structure to a long finish. Well made.

Le Clarence de Haut Brion, Pessac-Léognan 2017
55% Merlot, 5.3% Cabernet Franc, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1.7% Petit Verdot
Deeper purple black right to the rim with a nose of more complex black fruits, savoury, blackcurrants and plummy too, mineral and stony, rich. On the palate the substantial black fruits are cooler and more linear than Chapelle, the tannins more complex and supple, masked by the fruit, really rich and cool, with firm structure but good balance. Fresh, vibrant, intense and really racy to a long, grilled finish. Utterly delicious.

Château Haut Bailly, Grand Cru Classé, Pessac Léognan 2017
60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Franc
Despite the frost, Haut Bailly produced a pretty classic blend. Deep red black with a nose of concentrated black fruits, some grilled notes, quite muted with some black cherry notes, leading to a palate of rich black fruits, soft and supple on entry, really sweet and layered with tannins ripe and supple behind; some mineral notes and juicy, cool fruit, poised, fresh and racy. Long and delicious. Drink 2029 - 2037

£888
Château Haut Brion, 1er Cru Classé, Pessac Léognan 2017
53% Merlot, 6.3% Cabernet Franc, 40.7% Cabernet Sauvignon
Deep purple black but less opaque than La Mission and very different in style. More evolved black fruits on the nose, some mineral and stony notes, and smoky too; on the palate huge black fruit on entry, smooth and sweet, intense, supple and almost saline, really rich and powerful but also beautifully restrained with perfumed, sweet cherry on the finish, fresh acidity and a very distant grilled note, although the wood is totally in abeyance.

Château La Mission Haut Brion, Pessac Léognan 2017
56% Merlot, 4.4% Cabernet Franc, 39.6% Cabernet Sauvignon
Deeper purple black, opaque to the rim with a fabulously intense nose of grilled black fruits, savoury, layered, really focused and stunning, leading to an intense palate of smoky black fruits, not exotically spiced but really linear and directional, rich and fresh with some almost leafy notes, the big tannins ripe and supple, but hugely structured to a spiced, perfumed finish. This is a very big wine with racy acidity and destined for a long life. Fabulous.

Château Pape Clément, Grand Cru Classé de Graves, Pessac-Léognan 2017
Deep red black to rim, with nose of grilled new wood, black currant fruit with some crème pâtissière notes, alluring and with good definition. Substantial black fruit on the palate, smooth on entry, with big, supple tannins and extract but well-balanced, sweet, grilled and tarry with a hint of cedar and a lovely savoury, mouth-watering character going to a long, fresh finish. Perhaps not as layered as usual but a well-made wine. 2025 – 2035+

£758

La Parde Haut Bailly, Pessac Léognan 2017
65% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon
Deep red black, quite intense, to the rim; on the nose rich black fruit, vinous with some sappy black fruit and grilled new wood too, leading to a palate of lovely succulent sweet black fruit, much more alluring than the nose implies, balanced between tannins and fruit; some red cherry / cherryade flavours, succulent and mouth-watering on the finish, possibly a little light on the end. Drink 2025 - 2032

Deep purple black but not opaque, with a nose of very sweet red black fruit, creamed and fresh, brambly and leafy, leading to a palate of more brambly black fruit, juicy and supple with toasty, grilled notes behind the rich red fruit, with lively acidity and a really lovely long elegant finish. Deceptively approachable. 2023 - 2033+
