Canon-Fronsac
Château Moulin Pey Labrie, Canon-Fronsac 2017
Deep red black with a nose of tight, savoury black fruit, not hugely defined and not marked by new wood, with rich red black fruit on the palate and massive tannins, almost too extracted, with good black fruit behind and marked acidity  before going to a long, savoury finish, the tannins becoming more supple on the end.

Montagne St Emilion
Dame de Boüard, Montagne St Emilion 2017 (6 per case)
Deep purple black right to the rim, semi opaque; gorgeous black cherry fruit on the nose, ripe with new wood, really alluring and layered, perfumed, sappy and fresh. On the palate violets, black fruits, some truffle notes, rich, intense and beautifully poised with substantial supple tannins, fresh and really well done. Long, sweet, tarry and delicious.
Drink 2022 - 2028

Clos de Boüard, Montagne St Emilion 2017
100% Merlot
Even deeper black red than the Dame de Boüard. Dense, semi opaque; rich and vinous on the nose, less alluring initially than the Dame with black fruits, Morello cherry, more bitter (cocoa) than sweet. Big black fruit on the palate with quite high extract and noticeable acidity, with big black fruits behind, sweet and ripe to a long finish. They lost some 60% of their Merlot here because of the frost. Drink 2023 - 2030

St Emilion

Château Angélus, 1er Grand Cru Classé A St Emilion 2017
70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc; 100% new wood.
Deep dark purple black, opaque, with a lovely, toasty, grilled nose of black fruits, violets, rich and layered, overt but linear and so very old time Angélus! On the palate deliciously ripe black fruits, some violets, softer in the mid palate but with lots of big structured yet supple tannins behind, mineral, pure and hugely primary and deliciously fresh with some cacao on the finish too, which is long and structured. This is not a sledgehammer but really classy stuff.

Impenetrable initially then superb on the finish showing what is in store for the future: rich, grilled, savoury and complex - what a wine! Drink 2027 - 2039

Le Petit Cheval, Grand Cru St Emilion 2017
Tarry black fruit, black jelly, on the nose, quite leafy and closed, with distinct graphite notes. On the palate, smooth black fruits, almost too smooth but with substantial tannins behind, a hint of roses, fresh, vibrant, really lovely but perhaps without the big heart needed? The finish is ripe and racy, nicely layered and intense, growing on the second tasting and really long.

Château Le Prieuré, Grand Cru St Emilion 2017
This has absolutely wonderful richness and freshness with a saline note - I tasted it twice and it impressed even more the second time. It's a real success in the vintage, although it carries the signature of an austere, savoury-fruited year. Undergoing biodynamic conversion over the full 6.24ha, divided into 19 plots on south-facing slopes of the plateau. Jean Claude Berrouet consults.Drinking Window 2022 - 2035
