76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot
Deep purple black right to the rim, semi opaque with an appealing, luscious nose of big creamed black fruits, tar and spice. On the palate sweet black fruit, Morello cherry, grilled and ripe, plump but then racy behind with fresh acidity, linear, with lovely creamed, toasty back notes. Juicy and intense on the finish and really rich too. Drink 2028-2038

Château Capbern, St Estèphe 2017
55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 3% Cabernet France, 3% Petit Verdot
Very deep, dark, purple black, semi opaque with an alluring, perfumed nose of sweet, black, spiced fruits with a hint of walnut, leading to a palate with massive black fruits on entry, tight with some grilled notes and a hint of new wood behind to a substantial, black-fruited finish. It needs time  for all the different elements to slot into place, but when they do, this is a future winner. Drink 2022-2032

£175

Château Cos d’Estournel, 2ème Cru Classé St Estèphe 2017
66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc; 60% new wood.
Dense dark black right to the rim with a nose of soured black fruits, Morello cherry, rich and earthy, dense and ripe leading to a palate that is fabulous on entry with really big black fruits, expressive, rich, fresh, linear – this is not a blockbuster in the mouth but really subtle and intense, layered and smooth with lovely creamed red fruits, to a long, sweet and rich finish. Elegance and power. Really lovely. Drink 2029 - 2042+

£1,308

Dame de Montrose, St Estèphe 2017
49% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot
Deep purple black, semi opaque, with a nose of powerful, mineral black fruit, stony and intense, really charismatic, perfumed and floral too, really expressive. On the palate, lots of sweet black fruit on entry, very cool and poised, intense and concentrated, ripe and floral too, very much cool fruit, with some spice and concentration, the tannins are very supple and complete the picture to an inky, mouth-watering yet cool and structured long finish. Drink 2025 - 2035

Château Lafon Rochet, 4ème Cru Classé St Estèphe 2017
55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot with the balance made up of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Dense purple black, with a nose of smoky black fruit initially, savoury and almost meaty - slightly reduced at this stage - leading to a palate of substantial black fruit, smooth and supple, savoury with a feral hint, apparently from the Cabernet with fresh acidity and big ripe tannins behind, layered and really concentrated to a long, evolving finish. Big wine, a great success. Drink 2027-2039

£380

Les Pagodes de Cos, St Estèphe 2017
56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot
Deep dark red to the rim with a tight nose of soured black fruits, some crème pâtissière, vanilla and grilled black fruits, leading to a lovely plump palate of juicy black fruits, toasty and cedary, alluringly powerful and rich, intense and very well made – fresh, fresh, fresh! – with lovely layers of perfume and earthiness too, going to a long finish. Delicious wine. Drink 2025 - 2035

£360

Le Marquis de Calon Ségur, St Estèphe 2017 - top pick
57% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc
Less intense in colour, vibrant to a lighter rim, with a nose of mineral, stony red fruits, fresh and perfumed; substantial black and red fruits on the palate, cool and poised with big, creaky tannins, some sweetness behind but more demanding than in other years, less generous, there are some grilled and creamed notes but they are not obvious, leading to a mouth-watering finish that grows and sweetens. Drink 2025-2035

£220

Château Meyney, St Estèphe 2017
Sadly, this wine is no longer shown at the UGC tastings and we did not taste it. Jane Anson of www.decanter.com awarded it 92 points with the following tasting note:
"This is more proof of the consistency of Meyney. It has clear oak finessing, well held together with a cinnamon dusting and white pepper spicing, giving a gourmet edge with its own character. This feels finessed, contemporary and accomplished; a pretty complete package. This perhaps doesn't quite have the generosity of 2016, as the tannins are a little more tightly-drawn, but this is still good. Retasted several times and it stands out for its quality. Harvested 15 September to 5 October. Hubert de Boüard is consultant, with Anne Le Naour technical director. Drinking Window 2024 - 2036"

£228
Château Montrose, 2ème Cru Classé St Estèphe 2017
76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot
Deep dense purple black right to the rim but not opaque with cedar and grilled perfume on the nose, some mineral, stony notes too with damson and mulberry but not overt; the palate shows gorgeously sweet black fruit, intense and ripe, much more so than the nose indicated, but with good structure behind too, really layered and powerful, fresh and just wow! Mouth-watering and complex on the finish, this is a wine whose power is only just masked by the elegance that shines through. A gorgeous wine. Drink 2030 - 2043+

Château Ormes de Pez, Cru Bourgeois St Estèphe 2017
42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 51% Merlot, 6% Cabernet France, 1% Petit Verdot
Deep, dense black red to pink on the rim; a lovely nose of sweet black fruits, chalky and creamed, very appealing. On the palate, racy black fruit, some grilled new wood, fresh and vibrant with fine ripe tannins going to a long, pretty finish. Great Value. Drink 2022-2033

£235
Château de Pez, St Estèphe 2017
51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, 1.5% Petit Verdot, 1.5% Cabernet Franc; no frost.
Vibrant red black to the rim with a nose of slightly acetic black fruits – sweet, warm blackcurrants – perfumed and quite expressive. The palate has fresh, juicy black fruit with fresh acidity and ripe supple tannins, some new wood is evident at the end but the wine is very juicy and well made. Delicious.
