St Julien
Château Beychevelle, 4ème Cru Classé St Julien 2017
Tasted from a very tiny sample. Deep purple red right to the rim, semi opaque, with tight red and black fruit on the nose, going to a palate of substantial red and black fruit, grilled, spiced, vibrant and layered, with some Morello cherry notes, the tannins are big but supple too and beautifully in check to a sweet, ripe, structured finish. Very well done. Drink 2025 - 2035

Château Branaire-Ducru, 4ème Cru Classé St Julien 2017
Deep red black but not opaque, vibrant and limpid. Very fumey, and slightly reduced on the nose at the time of tasting (at the St Julien UGC), tight, leading to a palate of blackcurrant pastilles, some sweet and black fruit, quite austere although the tannins are ripe but it is difficult to see its direction at present; ripe with good length. Slight enigma … Drink 2022 - 2035

£410

Clos du Marquis, St Julien 2017
72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc; 55% new wood
From 45 hectares of vines in one block, with a minimum age of 55 years. Dense purple black, vibrant to the rim with a nose of concentrated blackcurrant fruit, the clay-rich soils showing through, incredibly inviting. Floral on the palate – violets and even some roses – with substantial, rich fruit, really alluring, the lightly grilled notes scarcely noticeable, lightly savoury. This is a lovely wine, layered and fine to a long and satisfying finish. Drink 2025 - 2036

£430

Connetable de Talbot, St Julien 2017
Red black, not opaque, with an earthy, mineral nose of blackcurrant fruit, quite austere. The palate is very Cabernet in style with soft blackcurrant fruit, some grilled notes, elegant and fresh behind the big but ripe tannins. An attractive medium term wine. Drink 2023 - 2028

£205
La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou, St Julien 2017
58% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon; 100% new wood
A slight change from the normal blend of majority Cabernet Sauvignon this year because the Merlots were so generous in 2017. The vineyard is in Beychevelle, close to the La Mouline river and did not suffer any frost damage; handled in exactly the same way as their Grand Cru Classé wines.
Very deep, intense red black, semi-opaque; tight and closed on the nose at present with some violet notes leading to a palate of dense black fruits, soft and supple, with substantial but very smooth rounded tannins behind, perfumed and rich, well integrated, to a very long, rich, spiced finish. Drink 2027-2038+

£372

Château Ducru Beaucaillou, 2ème Cru Classé St Julien 2017
90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot; 18 months in 100% new wood
From 43 hectares scattered around the estate harvested 25th September to 3rd October
Deep opaque purple black to the rim with a nose of intense, savoury black fruit – including mulberries – perfumed, spiced, some nutmeg and vanilla, with a light note of underbrush. Delicious deep black and red fruits on the palate, really sweet and intense, spiced with massive, supple tannins, the oak not overwhelming despite being 100% new, going to a rich, intense, savoury and long finish, cool and poised. This is a good wine for the long term. Drink 2030 - 2040

£1,488

Château Gloria, St Julien 2017
Dense purple black to the rim, not opaque, with a nose of tight black fruits, quite fumey and very different to Château St Pierre, more mineral and intense. Deep black fruits on the palate with some toasty notes, rich but cool with marked acidity, the tannins are more under control here and it’s probably the better wine of the two, going to a long finish.

£320
Château Gruaud Larose, 2ème Cru Classé St Julien 2017
61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot; 7% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot
Dense purple black almost opaque but not quite, with a nose of sweet tarry black fruits, very Cabernet with a note of mint. Rich, dense and intense on the palate mineral and stony, fresh with some sweetness and crème pâtissière behind – a cleaner wine than in previous years, with good length. A good success for Gruaud Larose. Drink 2028 - 2035+

£620
Château Lagrange, 3ème Cru Classé St Julien 2017
Purple black but not opaque with sweet black fruits on the nose, grilled new wood, quite tight at present, leading to a palate of slightly soured black fruits – Morello cherry but without the sweetness – grilled,  cool and classic, fresh with moderate acidity, the ripe tannins mostly hidden behind the fruit. A bright, vibrant wine. Drink 2025 - 2035+

£370
Château Lalande Borie, St Julien 2017
66% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon; 12 months in barrel of which 30% is new
Grown on sandy soils close to Lagrange
Dense black fruit, with a perfumed nose of really big black fruits, hints of new wood too and some grilled notes. On the palate, the rich, sweet black fruit is smooth and supple with some cocoa notes and big tannins, really ripe and mouth filling to a sweet, fresh finish. Drink 2026 - 2035

£222

Château Langoa Barton, 3ème Cru Classé St Julien 2017
54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc;
picked 15th-18th September; 60% new wood
Dense purple black right to the rim, semi-opaque, with crushed black fruits on the nose and palate, really dense and inky, very concentrated, a classic St Julien, textured, with massive fruit, and very substantial tannins too but really supple and integrated, a big wine and very different from Léoville Barton. Quite supreme. Drink 2025 - 2035+

£390
Château Léoville Barton, 2ème Cru Classé St Julien 2017
Dense purple black semi opaque right to the rim with a nose of fresh black fruit, very tight and closed, some grilled vanilla notes. Tight again on the palate, opening up to fresh, vibrant black fruits with really ripe tannins behind, lovely freshness from balanced acidity, intense and layered with squeaky tannins. Tight as can be at present but a really fine wine. Drink 2028 - 2040

£654

Château Léoville Las Cases, 2ème Cru Classé St Julien 2017
55ha in total, including the plots dedicated to Le Petit Lion; 100,000 bottles produced; blended entirely in December and put to barrel on 15th December.
Deep purple black, right to the rim, semi opaque, with a nose of sweet toasty black fruit, vinous with strong blackcurrant notes, very distant grilled notes too, rich and tarry. On the palate the intensity is impressive, rich, dense, smooth and ripe, some dark chocolate and crème pâtissière, hugely spiced and rich, really long and the tannins so ripe that you just don’t notice them. Coffee and grilled notes on the end. Wow! 2029 - 2040+

£888

6 per case

Château Léoville Poyferré, 2ème Cru Classé St Julien 2017
Deep semi opaque purple black right to the rim with a nose of tight, dusty black fruit, Morello cherry and damson, perfumed and spiced too. On the palate substantial cool black fruit, sweet yet lightly savoury, very intense with big supple tannins behind, really elegant and without the brute power of some years. Really long and delicious, a great wine.Drink 2027 - 2040

£666

Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases, St Julien 2017
52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc; 15 months in 30% new wood.
40,000 bottles produced from selected plots including some very old Merlot down by the river and some old-vine Cabernet next to Latour. Aiming for a rich, silky wine with minerality.
Dense purple black to the rim, semi opaque, with an alluring nose of rich blackcurrant fruit, some mineral notes but also plump and a little floral, with a very distant grilled note. Smooth on entry, almost too smooth but then the flavours and structure become apparent; the acidity is there but not marked and there are medium, very ripe and unobtrusive tannins as well as a lightly grilled touch to a rich, long finish with good depth. Drink 2025 - 2035

£444

La Petite Marquise du Clos du Marquis, St Julien 2017
74% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon; 30% new wood
Dense purple black with a nose of vibrant black fruits, new wood, some toasty and grilled notes but tight and not obvious. On the palate, lovely smooth creamy black fruits, juicy, rich and intense, really pretty with lots of power for a second wine, nicely made and well done, sweet but a little short on the finish.

£225
Sarget de Gruaud Larose 2017

£210
Château St Pierre, 4ème Cru Classé St Julien 2017
Deep purple black to the rim, semi opaque with a nose of savoury, slightly twisted black fruits, much more overt than others, attractive, leading to a rich, dense and intense palate with lots of red fruit and substantial, slightly angular tannins behind too, fresh and well balanced. Good wine.

£470
Château Talbot, 4ème Cru Classé St Julien 2017
Deep red black to the rim, not opaque with a fresh, floral nose spiced and perfumed black fruit, some vanillin and grilled notes, stylish. Rich, intense but very cool black and red fruits on the palate, fresh and vibrant with marked acidity and alcohol too, the ripe tannins mostly hidden by the fruit and going to a fresh mid-length finish. Drink 2025-2034
