Sweet White Bordeaux
Château Bastor Lamontagne, Sauternes 2017
Bright gold with a nose of sweet mushroomy fruit, some orange peel notes and a hint of wallpaper paste too; on the palate sweet, leafy and fresh, some orange peel notes but with low acidity and slightly one-dimensional; sweet and not complex.

£205

Château Coutet, 1er Grand Cru Classé Barsac 2017
Pale gold with green glint; sweet white stone fruit on the nose, some caramel, grilled and leafy. On the palate light on entry, low in sugar compared to other wines, but also quite low botrytis and acidity. A pleasant wine but would like to see more real stuffing. Drink 2025-2035

£340
Château Doisy-Daëne, 2ème Cru Classé Barsac 2017
Bright gold with a green glint; on the nose sweet mushrooms and white fruit, some orange peel and white pear and a light onion note too; on the palate big smooth white fruit, again some mushroom, a lovely bite of acidity and good freshness and layering. Nice wine, not complex. Drink 2025-2035

£315

Château Doisy Védrines, 2ème Cru Classé Sauternes-Barsac 2017
(half bottles only)

Deepish gold with a nose of leafy white stone fruit, very fresh and vibrant, with light mushroom character behind the fruit; lovely fresh white stone fruits on the palate, good acidity here and some orange peel and botrytis notes but incredibly fresh too. Long on the finish and one of my highlights of the tasting. A really lovely wine. Drink 2022 - 2030

Château Lafaurie Peyraguey, Sauternes 2017
Bright gold with a nose of vibrant white fruits, leafy and very fresh; on the palate the light white stone fruits are fresh and vinous with light botrytis and musky white fruits to a long, sweet finish that grows. Well made. Drink 2021 - 2029

£425
Château de Malle, Sauternes 2017

£295
Château de Rayne Vigneau, Sauternes 2017
Deeper gold with a nose of ripe white stone fruits, some leafy green notes, caramel and a very distant hint of botrytis. The palate is fresh but very sweet, again the distant hint of botrytis, the acidity seems lacking on the end palate but comes out a long time later – a bit of a paradox. Drink 2021-2028

£375
Château Rieussec, 1er Cru Classé Sauternes 2017
Deepish gold with a very slight green glint; rich, toasty and grilled on the nose, crème brulée and a light mushroom note, leafy too. The palate is rich, racy and fresh but also very sweet, without massive botrytis character but some good acidity, rich and fat.  Nice wine.

Château Suduiraut 1er Cru Classé Sauternes 2017
Pale gold with a nose of leafy green fruits, fresh and zingy, really alluring with a distant grilled hint; restrained and rich on the palate, with hints of botrytis, very cool and poised with grilled notes behind the white stone fruits, just enough acidity, good depth and freshness then rich and sweet on extended finish. Really good. Drink 2022 – 2035

£565

Château La Tour Blanche, 1er Cru Classé Sauternes 2017
Bright gold with a nose of fresh leafy white stone fruits, very distant caramel and a hint of botrytis. On the palate, quite sweet on entry with some leafy freshness too and lovely concentrated fruit, creamed toffee, with good acidity behind the whole to a long, fresh finish with a hint of new wood at the end. Drink 2022 - 2030
