Clos Cantenac, Grand Cru St Emilion 2015
“This is the first truly serious wine that Clos Cantenac has made in terms of age-ability and also complexity. I love the mantra here, and the fruit and skill has always been top notch, but in 2015 there is the elusive X-Factor that everyone searches for and few find.”
Martin Krajewski is probably the human equivalent of perpetual motion. He has the enthusiasm and optimism of a spaniel which means that where mere mortals might be content with a good result, he sees it simply as the starting point for a better one. Until late last year, Martin divided his time between Château de Sours and Clos Cantenac but since the sale of de Sours he has had both the time and resources to invest further in his St Emilion jewel, producing a Rosé here for the first time in 2015, amongst other things.
Clos Cantenac now totals 6 hectares under vine with Petit Cantenac coming from the same plots as the grand vin – a true second wine. The soils of deep gravel and sand over clay were instrumental in keeping the fruit fit and healthy in the challenging 2015 growing season when vines on pure gravel and sand suffered from the drought in June and July whilst those with clay subsoils were in a better position and able to draw on water stored in the clay; by the same token, the gravel and sand allowed the August rain to run through, quickly refreshing the vines but not allowing them to gorge themselves on water. The resulting wines are beautifully fresh with lots of ripe tannins for their backbone, really delicious and deceptively approachable now but with more than enough stuffing for the longer term. The only downside in the equation is that yields weren’t particularly generous so an early reply is recommended.

“The most serious and structured Clos Cantenac I’ve yet tasted. This is a veritable vin de garde that will age beautifully over the next 15 years. But the real reason I’m buying this vintage is a simple one. Clos Cantenac is still punching above its weight with a reputation that’s building and consolidating with every vintage. This firm wine is alive with pedigree and finesse - I’ve already placed my order.” Olly Smith

Clos Cantenac, Grand Cru St Emilion 2015 BOTTLES
Dense purple black with a tight, intense, black fruited nose, sweet and spiced with hints of mulberry and logan berry, mineral but reticent when compared to the overt Petit Cantenac. Smooth, juicy black fruits on the palate, soft and supple, are underscored by substantial super-ripe tannins, with lovely depth and richness, going to a long, mineral, saline and savoury finish. Delicious.
