Every year, we find our Right Bank benchmarks being set when we taste with Christian and Edouard Moueix as they unfailingly translate both the vintage and the vineyard in each of their wines and this year was no exception. Here we tasted wines right across the price spectrum and all shared the same traits of understatement, finesse and intensity.

2016 on the Right Bank was, as elsewhere, a challenging vintage in the first half of the growing season with cold, wet weather constantly threatening diseases which could potentially decimate both the young flowers and leaves; thankfully flowering was more successful than anyone could dare hope for and towards the end of June, things brightened up and spirits lifted as the sun came out. July and August were hot and dry, yet with the cool nights which are the trademark of this vintage, allowing the vines some respite from the daily temperatures, and it is in some of the Saint Emilion and Pomerol vineyards that the importance of their soils comes to the fore. Most of the best vineyards in Saint Emilion are on solid limestone outcrops which act like a sponge soaking up excess water, whilst the top Pomerol vineyards are on the legendary clay, again a good water retainer. Here the vines were able to access as much water as they needed all season long, whilst other poorer vineyards on sandy soils on the periphery of the appellations had a harder time of it, particularly those planted with young vines which have yet to establish a deep root system.

13th September saw a significant storm over the whole of the Bordeaux region, with some 30mm of rainfall in Saint Emilion during the course of the night, which had the benefit of refreshing any vines which were struggling and giving a boost to the others; as the soils were very dry, much of the excess ran off ensuring that the vines didn’t take up too much water. Although cooler weather followed the storm, the sun remained ever-present, drying the fruit and getting the Merlots into perfect condition for their harvesting towards the end of the month and into early October.

These wines are, across the board, tours de force, incredibly elegant, rich yet not opulent, powerful yet subtle, and will make lovers of classic Bordeaux immensely happy. We expect interest in all of the wines to be very high indeed, particularly the most sought after labels and we urge you to try wines across the spectrum – in this vintage you will not be disappointed.
