The beautiful Château Carignan was built in 1452 and lies just 10km to the east of Bordeaux in the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux AOC. The property takes advantage of the clay-limestone hillsides covered with stony gravel, producing supple, well-rounded wines principally from the Merlot grape.
The estate itself covers 150 acres, of which 65 are planted with vines fertilised organically by a herd of limousine cows. The vineyards are planted with 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet and 10% Cabernet Franc with almost a third over 40 years old and the remainder ranging from 8-25 years old.
The grapes for Château Carignan are hand harvested from 28 hectares of vines with an average age of 25 years. Each parcel is vinified separately in the Château’s state of the art winery in small temperature controlled tanks (stainless steel for the Cabernet and smoothed concrete for the Merlot) before maturation for 9 to 12 months in one and two year old oak casks from different forests. The wine is estate bottled.
