Domaine Seguin Manuel
« As I have mentioned several times ever since this name was resurrected from history, Thibaut is a talented winemaker not just amongst those that enjoy his wines, but respected by many of his peers. They represent good value in the marketplace…If you are looking for affordable, well-crafted Burgundy, then look no further than here.»
Robert Parker Jr
180 years after the domaine was founded in 1824, Seguin-Manuel has been completely renewed following its acquisition by Thibaut Marion in 2004.
Thibaut is a man on a mission. Born into a family of vignerons, steeped in the wine business for 10 generations in Beaune, Thibaut started his career at the family winery Chanson Père & Fils where he worked for seven years. Since Chanson became part of the Bollinger stable, he has been intent on building up the holdings of his own company, Seguin-Manuel, adding new vineyards both to his personal portfolio as well as his négociant selection, from right across the Côte d’Or, using all his experience and energy to produce really great wines.
Initially located solely in Savigny-lès-Beaune, new plots have been added to the domaine in the villages of Beaune and Puligny-Montrachet (2007) and more recently in Pommard, Meursault and Vosne-Romanée. More than 8 hectares of vineyards are now directly grown by the domaine organically, with no use of chemicals. The soil is ploughed in order to strengthen the roots of the vines and the date of harvest is decided when each plot has reached its full ripeness. Each plot is hand harvested.
As one third of a trio calling themselves Les Barbouzes (the bearded ones), Thibaut Marion is responsible for introducing us to another member of the group, Jean-Michel Chartron, of Puligny Montrachet. Together with Antoine Olivier from Santenay they promote their wines as a group rather than individually with the emphasis being on the lighter-hearted enjoyment of wine, whilst nevertheless making some deadly serious wines.
