The offers in this section have expired but we are surprised by how often our customers refer back to past offers to see how market values have changed and as reference points for drinking dates and Nicola's tasting notes.

We hope you find this selection of past offers useful and that you will not hesitate to ask us if you would like us to source any of the wines for you at current prices by calling James on 01353 721 993 or e-mailing james@privatecellar.co.uk.

Bin End Sale!

As our year end approaches and The Budget looms, bringing with it the inevitable rise in Duty, we thought that it was a good time to sell off the few remaining stocks of wines where we have moved on to a subsequent vintage, and generally have a Spring clean of wines where the volumes are just too small to add to our annual list but too delicious to ignore. Dominus & Napanook 2009

With each passing vintage the wines from Dominus grow in stature, showing off the fabulous contrasts of New World flamboyance and Old World restraint to extraordinary effect, and the 2009 wines are no exception.

Chablis, Domaine William Fevre 2011

Already expressive and attractive, these wines will drink before their 2009 and 2010 siblings. Our notes constantly refer to their pure, clean, fresh fruit flavours and there is none of the reserve that one usually associates with young Fèvre Chablis. That said, the grands crus deserve some more time in bottle and will give much pleasure over a five year period to those who can resist the temptation. Read more...

Domaines Joseph & Philippe Roty 2010

During our visit to the Roty family in December 2012, we were rewarded with some delicious wines, which reminded us of just how good, classically good, the 2010 vintage was. This year we have streamlined our offering slightly to concentrate more on individual wines, but we have also added a delicious Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire - a misnomer if ever there was one. The Rhône - 2011 Vintage

Coming hot on the heels of the spectacular 2009 and 2010 vintages, 2011 had a hard act to follow in the Rhône yet it has done a remarkably complementary job. Where the 2009s were flamboyant and the 2010s restrained and classic, the 2011s are very pretty, accessible wines with a lovely purity which will give immense pleasure in the medium rather than longer term. Domaine Leflaive 2011

The harvest at Domaine Leflaive began on 25th August, finishing on 31st August - so no September picking, a first at the Domaine and virtually unheard of in Burgundy. The wines reflect minerality and purity, beautifully demonstrating their differing terroirs and soils, possibly more so than in other recent vintages. A really refreshing vintage, one that will bring a smile of sheer pleasure to people's faces. Read more...

Château de Sours Rosé 2012

Welcome to our annual "early bird", beat-The-Budget offer of Château de Sours Rosé. It may seem untimely to be buying rosé whilst there is snow lying on the ground in the UK but now is the best time to buy to take advantage of owner, Martin Krajewski's special prices and after one of the wettest years on record, with the least amount of recorded sunshine, perhaps sunshine in a bottle and a hearty dose of optimism is what we all need. Joseph Phelps Vineyards - Napa Valley and Sonoma Coast

Don't miss this opening offer of the wines from the Phelps Family, both from their traditional Napa Valley home and also from their Joseph Phelps Freestone Vineyards on the Sonoma Coast. These wines come highly recommended by the critics and wine consumers alike and are consistently excellent. In fact, Insignia has scored over 92 points (RP) in 20 consecutive vintages. There are not many wines that can boast that accolade! Read more...

The Bigger the Better

Whoever said that size doesn’t matter clearly wasn’t up on their wine trivia, for size matters hugely. Magnums have long been extolled as the ideal format for ageing wines, giving the optimum wine : glass ratio which ensures perfect, even maturation, thereby combining the best from the wine with great feel-good factor. For there is no doubt that a magnum sitting on a table looks a whole lot more expansive than two bottles of the same wine – yet there is no difference. No doubt psychologists would have a field day trying to explain it, but whichever way you look at it, magnums look great, feel generous and make guests feel hugely welcome.  Read more...

An unmissable Champagne offer: when it's gone, it's gone!

As you may know, we are all mad about Chauvet's Blanc de Noirs, with its gorgeously yeasty, biscuity nose redolent of warm summer days, so any excuse to tuck a bit more into our cellars should be welcomed, especially at these prices! The offer will be very much first come, first served so don't delay in calling us on 01353 721 999 to place your order. Read more...

Introducing Rocche Costamagna

Dating back to the 19th Century and already award winning in 1911, by the end of the Second World War Rocche Costamagna had become little more than a fruit farm, making wine only for family consumption and selling the rest of the grapes to other  producers. In the 1960s, the property was taken over by the next generation and since the 1980s the estate has been run with flair and energy by Alessandro Locatelli. Following principals of minimum intervention in the winemaking process, and keeping yields  strictly controlled, Alessandro has succeeded in producing wines which are as individual as they are representative of their grape varieties and appellations – no mean feat.

Bin End Sale! REGIONAL FRANCE, EUROPE & NEW WORLD

Following on from our Bordeaux and Burgundy bin ends, this final selection is made up of regional French wines and a small assortment from Italy, Germany and Spain and finishing in the New World. We feel that we should perhaps apologise for this section being so sparsely populated but these wines have a great following through our annual wine list and we find that there are very few odd bottles left as we change vintages. There are, however, many bargains to be had, particularly by making up some mixed cases from the odd bottles and also in case quantities with wines such as Maison Mayol’s extremely quaffable Merlot (no 9) perfect for parties. Bin End Sale! BURGUNDY

From the very first days of Private Cellar, in 2005, we have concentrated our efforts in expanding our Burgundy listing and there are some real gems here including a good selection of odd bottles at under £40 from some of the greatest growers of the Côte d’Or, from Domaine Joseph Roty in the north to Thierry Matrot of Domaine Matrot in the south. One of our most popular selections, we usually sell out of White Burgundy on our main list but there are a few cases and bottles left from our top growers and we’ll be surprised if the last few bottles of wines such as Thierry Matrot’s delicious St Romain and Domaine Hubert Lamy’s 2008 magnums stay undetected for long... Bin End Sale! BORDEAUX

Over the next few days we will be offering wines at unbeatable prices, starting here with good selection of characterful and hand-crafted Bordeaux at under £20 a bottle. The Merlot grape dominates with delicious wines from the Right Bank, particularly the 1ères Côtes de Bordeaux where we have found such quality and value and if you are looking for a Bordeaux for a special occasion, you will find some well-priced big names which would do the job in the selection of wines available by the case. Every wine has perfect provenance and has been impeccably stored since it arrived in the UK so you can rest assured that there are no jaded or out of condition wines lurking in this offer! Germany 2011 - the Hat Trick vintage

Drinking Claret - no patience required!

The launch of a new vintage in Bordeaux usually results in us working flat out on the emerging wines, sussing out the best buys and the rising superstars. This year, however, we found ourselves rendered speechless by the erratic pricing emerging from the Aquitaine for the 2011 wines so here we are instead offering you a range of really delicious wines which are either drinking now, but will also keep well, or else which are at the peak of their maturity – no need to wait eighteen months for their arrival, nor a further number of years before you can drink them, but instead you can take delivery in the next couple of months and drink them as soon as you like. Bordeaux 2011 - the Private Cellar Selection

This Private Cellar Selection is a collection of our top picks for value, taste and sensible pricing in the 2011 vintage. These are not necessarily the famous names but they are wines which will give great pleasure for wine drinkers in the medium term and we are very pleased to recommend them. Prices are per case of 12 bottles in bond, unless otherwise marked and to order, please contact your salesperson or call 01353 721 999. Read more...

Clos Cantenac 2011

Famously never a man to stand still, Martin Krajewski's overhaul of Clos Cantenac continues apace. More than two hectares of vines were added this year to their vineyard holding, bringing the estate to just over five hectares in size, and replanting of superannuated or underprodutive vines continues. Whilst all proprietors are enthusiastic about their vineyards and wines, few have the energy or ebullience to match Martin when talking about Clos Cantenac and his plans for its future... Ets Jean-Pierre Moueix 2011

Each year, our tasting at Ets Jean-Pierre Moueix allows us to set our personal parameters for the quality of the vintage on the Right Bank. Normally when tasting, the principal flavours jump out at us - fruit, acidity, tannin - but tasting the 2011 wines from the Moueix stable was a lesson in balance, and the tannic structure was, in almost every instance, so completely wrought into the fruit flavours that we had to force ourselves to comment on it. Here we offer four Ets Jean-Pierre Moueix wines. The Grands Vins will be released later in the campaign. Read more...

A Very Special Offer of Red & White Burgundy

The 2009 Burgundies have been steadily arriving in our cellars but many will not be drinking for a few years to come and this has prompted us to review our stocks of older Burgundies, wines which are either ready to drink or close to their drinking dates right now. So here we have a collection of delicious drinking wines, available in small quantities on a first come first served basis. They are all discounted to well below list price (most by over 15%) and so this is a chance to get your hands on some superb Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from one of the wine world’s greatest terroirs at a snip of the market price. 2010 Burgundy

Given all that we had heard all about the 2010 growing season, harvest and vinification, it was with some trepidation that we approached our tastings, having encountered stories of extreme temperatures, thunderstorms and even exploding vines, yet we were confounded at our very first red wine tasting by gorgeously floral, perfumed red fruits, supple, ripe, juicy – and the word ripe appeared again and again in our tasting notes. Read more...

Domaines Joseph & Philippe Roty 2009

As with all the 2009 wines, these are so alluring that it is tempting to tuck into them immediately but it is clear that they have the structure – tannins and acidity – and fruit to evolve into something really rather special in the longer term.  Many in Burgundy are of the opinion that if they taste good now, then we should enjoy the 2009s without feeling the need to wait, however with a few years bottle age these wines will evolve into something even more complex than they are now. Quantities are extremely limited so please note that all orders will be confirmed in writing. Read more...

Domaine Leflaive 2010

What struck us when tasting at both Domaine Leflaive and elsewhere on the Côte d’Or was the intense clarity of fruit due to the combination of small yields – reduced by the frost and difficult flowering – and the coup de tonnerre forcing early picking. The wines are delicious, with mouth-watering, primary fruit, with great depths of mineral flavours resulting from the vines concentrating their efforts on ripening fewer, smaller grapes. Reduced yields has, sadly, meant reduced availability so these wines are likely to sell out even more quickly than usual. Read more...

Château de Sours Rosé 2011 Early Bird Offer

Rather like hearing the first cuckoo, when the time comes to write the annual offer for Château de Sours’ luscious rosé we start to feel that spring isn’t too far away. Granted, it hasn’t been a hard winter this year (yet), but after a lacklustre summer we all feel the need for a bit of sunshine in our lives, either real or bottled, so where better place to start than a joyful rosé with its promise of warmth to come?

2010 Rhône

Travelling around the different Rhône regions last December, we found that many of the growers were slightly bemused by the global interest in the precocious 2009s because they knew – and told anyone who would listen – that the 2010 lying in the barrels was a much more interesting vintage. Textbook in terms of its growing season, it combines power and freshness, ripe tannins and sensible alcohol levels, which cannot be taken as given in the Rhône, resulting in elegant, poised wines which will make fine old bones. Domaine Michel Gros

Earlier this year, we visited Michel Gros for a fascinating and extensive tasting from his 2009s back to his 2003s. This offer comprises the most impressive wines from our tasting, all of which are ready for drinking and come highly recommended. Read more...

Château la Connivence and la Belle Connivence

With just one hectare of vines, or actually just under a hectare, this is a micro-Château like few others, where everything is individually managed from the health of the vines to the harvest of the individual bunches as and when they are ready - indeed, owner Alexandre de Malet Roquefort describes it as a small garden... Clos & Petit Cantenac 2010

Martin Krajewski and Marcus Le Grice have enjoyed a run of good vintages with Clos and Petit Cantenac with the wines selling out almost immediately after release. In 2010, with a new triage table and a pump-free system, relying simply on gravity, the fruit is fresher, more primary than ever and this may be partly responsible for the incredible purity of flavour to be found in these wines. Ets J-P Moueix 2010

Always respectful of both vintage and terroir, the Moueix wines consistently show the true style of the year unadulterated and free of the oak camouflage often found elsewhere. Château le Tertre Roteboeuf and Family 2010

Visits to François Mitjavile at le Tertre Roteboeuf are always a high point of any Bordeaux trip. Put a Spring in your step!
Bordeaux for Drinking Now

Having just returned from a gloriously sunny five days in Bordeaux where our principal goal was to  review the 2009s and gather some early opinions on the 2010s (watch this space, it really is another lovely vintage), we also tasted a very interesting cross-section of older wines which are delicious now – no waiting around for years, just really tasty immediate drinking. The wines are en route for drinking this Spring so we advise you to place your order now to take advantage of these fabulous prices. Rhône 2009

2009 is one of those rare vintages which, in common with the rest of France, was relatively regular throughout both regions, with possibly the cap going to the Northern Rhône. It remains the case that both North and South have made fabulous wines which will be very attractive early but which also have the ingredients to improve into the future. Read more...

Domaine Leflaive 2009

Visits to Domaine Leflaive are always some of the most informative of our Burgundy trips, with the tasting prefaced by a thorough dissection of the growing season and harvest conditions, be they good, bad or ugly, and their potential effects on the resulting wines. The 2009 vintage was already getting very good write-ups so it was extremely useful to hear, from the horse’s mouth, so to speak, exactly why it has been so successful. Read more...

Burgundy 2009

It's all about Burgundy this month with the release of the dazzling 2009 vintage - a year of purity and luscious opulence, a year in which nature brought in a text book harvest and we are thrilled to be offering such a variety of wines from a selection of superb producers and growers. Domaines Joseph and Philippe Roty
and Domaine Fontaine Gagnard 2008

As ever the Roty wines come highly recommended: approachable, just, in their youth, they repay cellaring for several years when they begin to develop the secondary, typical Pinot Noir characteristics. 2008 is a very classic year, pure, fresh, with good acidity levels which provide the necessary structure for development, giving sound foundations for a long life. Château la Connivence, Pomerol

Given the size of the Pomerol appellation, it is very rare that a bright new star emerges from the wings rather than an older property being rediscovered, yet in 2008 this is precisely what happened with Château la Connivence. A minuscule vineyard even by Pomerol standards, it stands at just 1.45 hectares (of which only 0.9 hectares are planted at present) on the northen side of the appellation... Read more...

Château de Sours Rosé - the 2010 NEW RELEASE!

Somehow the eccentric notion of offering a summer pink in the coldest months of the year has become an institution at Private Cellar, with our customers asking us as early as December when we will be offering the new vintage of Château de Sours Rosé. Part of this is, of course, the appeal of the generous pricing offered by proprietor Martin Krajewski as a lure to buy before the wine goes into bottle, but part of it has to be the escapism it offers us, with its promise of long, warm summer evenings to come once the more brutal part of winter is over. Germany 2009 Vintage

2009 was another one of those vintages in Northern Europe which appears to have been universally brilliant, from Burgundy to the much trumpeted Bordeaux regions right up to Champagne and beyond. Germany was no exception, and with Riesling being a grape which revels in a long, late ripening season the spectacular Indian Summer from which we all benefitted was the icing on an already rich cake... Joseph Phelps Vineyards and Freestone Winery

Despite radically different climates, the wines from Joseph Phelps’ Napa vineyards and Freestone’s vines on the Sonoma Coast clearly display their common parentage stylistically with their purity and clarity of fruit and the sheer attention to detail which is so often lacking in many a Californian wine. Never afraid to experiment in the pursuit of excellence, and prepared to accept the steep learning curve which comes hand in hand with breaking new ground, these wines are increasingly being recognised as leaders in their field.

Clos Cantenac, Grand Cru St Emilion

Having launched their new jewel to a sell-out crowd last year with their delicious 2007 vintage, Martin Krajewski and Marcus le Grice are very excited to be unveiling their gorgeous second vintage. The Clos Cantenac name is already causing a stir amongst the wine critics and can only become more famous and sought-after. Yields were down in 2008 so don’t miss out on the opportunity to add this wine to your collection.

Châteauneuf du Pape, Cuvée Etienne Gonnet

We are very excited to have been offered a small parcel of 2005 and 2006 vintages by the Gonnets, both exceptional vintages in the Rhône. Where 2005 is a powerful and concentrated vintage (in common with the wines of that year from many other regions of France) and destined for long keeping, 2006 is a more classic year, elegant and restrained.

Last of the Summer Wine

Ever the optimists, we are assuming that this August cold snap will lead to a glorious Indian Summer in September and so we have put together a selection of wines with this in mind – juicy reds and whites with a bit more body than you would want for a scorching hot day, but not the full blooded winter wines we are sure to need later in the year.

Clos Cantenac 2009

Grand Cru St Emilion Clos Cantenac burst onto the UK scene at the end of last year, having been rescued from wrack and ruin in the 2007 vintage by Martin Krajewski and Marcus Le Grice, the once dilapidated vineyards and cellars repaying in spades the attention which has been lavished upon them.

Ets J-P Moueix 2009

Rhône 2008

In the right hands, 2008 has produced some delicious wines with fine acidity and alcohol, and soft, less invasive tannins than the legendary 2007. These are wines which will provide some lovely drinking in the short to medium term, maturing significantly earlier than the 2007s.

Domaine Hubert Lamy
LARGE FORMATS!

Olivier Lamy is a vigneron through and through and his earliest memories are of walking in the vineyards with his parents. Olivier is a hard-working and dedicated grower, constantly changing his techniques and experimenting to make better and better wine – his ambition is simply to make the best St Aubin and, in our view, he is well on the way to achieving that goal.

Burgundy 2008

Having followed the weather reports throughout the year, and having been in Burgundy just after harvest last year, we were braced for some challenging tastings. What we didn’t expect to find, however, were such juicy, succulent reds with lovely supple tannins, and such fresh, vibrant whites. These are wines which will be gorgeous to drink in the medium term, whilst the best will last for some time, with their fine acidity replacing tannin for backbone.

Clos Cantenac, Saint Emilion Grand Cru

Intense, deeply flavoured, layered, with incredible finesse, Clos Cantenac, Saint Emilion Grand Cru is frankly extraordinary, even more so when you consider that this is the 2007 vintage, which was essentially cold and damp, saved at the last moment by the spectacular Indian summer. Harvested in the last week of September and the first week of October, the Clos Cantenac team took full advantage of the warm, dry days and cold nights to let the fruit ripen to its fullest.

MAGNUMS!

Although magnums are nothing more than two bottles in one, they deliver far more than twice the punch of a single bottle.
