Rhône 2013 En Primeur

Northern & Southern Rhône - The 2013 Vintage

The motif of the vintage has to be freshness, with higher acidities and
lower alcohol levels than usual. This notwithstanding, the wines are absolutely classic.

Visiting the Rhône in early November 2013, all appeared to be well with the world – late autumn sunshine, easily warm enough to sit outside in shirtsleeves, cool and misty at either end of the day, giving no indication of how turbulent the earlier weather had been.

Unusually dry in January and February, this was soon remedied by torrential rain in the early spring, replenishing the water table in time for the summer but the very cool spring meant that the vines budded late, setting the tone for the year with later than usual flowering in mid-June. Uneven weather across the region disrupted the flowering, both with wet and windy conditions and a sudden hot spell in Châteauneuf, which sent leaf growth into overdrive to the detriment of flower and fruit production, resulting in a huge number of aborted Grenache flowers (coulure), between 30 and 50%. Given that Grenache is one of the main constituents of Châteauneuf this represented a huge blow for the growers, with 2013 being the smallest vintage ever seen by many producers.

July was extremely wet, registering no less than three times the average rainfall, but either side of July was dry, if not particularly hot, and fine. The harvest started around a fortnight later than usual, but the smaller quantities on the vines meant that the fruit had been able to ripen fully, the saving grace of the small vintage, and with lovely supple tannins to boot. The motif of the vintage has to be freshness, with higher acidities and lower alcohol levels than usual. This notwithstanding the wines are absolutely classic.

In the Northern Rhône the Syrah fared, if anything, worse than the Grenache, with the disruptive flowering leading to both coulure and millérandage but the Indian summer ensured that this tiny crop came to full maturity with extraordinary elegance and finesse.

Quantities are tiny, both in reds and whites, and the quality in the north is extremely high, better than 2012, and with the ability to age in the mid to long term. In the south it was more of a struggle but top producers like Font de Michelle and Château Beauchêne have made wines which are fresh, charming and structured which will drink earlier than usual whilst retaining the ability to age for a decade or two.
