Tuscan wines from great estates

Tenuta San Guido (home of Sassicaia) and Tenuta dell’Ornellaia (home of Ornellaia and Masseto) are adjoining estates running up into the hills and crowned by ancient forests on the Maremma coast of Tuscany. With their patchwork of superb and varied terroirs, they have been able to successfully grow the great Bordeaux varieties as well as the indigenous Sangiovese and, between them, they are responsible for some of the most exciting wines being made in Tuscany today.

Cabernet vines were first planted at Tenuta San Guido by Mario Incisa della Rocchetta in the 1940s, a great admirer of Bordeaux who had noted the similarity between the stone strewn vineyards of the Graves and his own land. He sold the first vintage of Sassicaia commercially in 1968. His son, Nicolò has been responsible for building the reputation and quality of the estate’s wines internationally, introducing a second wine – Guidalberto - with the 2000 vintage, wanting to experiment with the Merlot grape and also to make a more rigorous selection for the grand vin.  In the 2002 vintage, he launched a third wine, Le Difese, which is a blend of Sangiovese fruit from the original plantings on the estate and fruit from young Cabernet vines.

Nicolò’s cousin, Lodovico Antinori, had been watching the Sassicaia story unfold with interest and decided to create his own vineyard, Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, which he founded in 1981. The flagship wine was joined in 1986 by Masseto (100% Merlot) and in 1997 Le Serre Nuove was launched, the second wine of Ornellaia. Since the creation of the estate Lodovico has partnered with Robert Mondavi and, more recently, with another Tuscan wine family, the Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi, the current owners of the estate.

These wines are offered in bond, London and the offer will close on Friday 17th July, 2015.
