Morgon, Christophe Savoye 2012

Red | France | Burgundy | 12.5% | Lighter, fruitier red

Possibly because of the malign influence of Beaujolais Nouveau, people seem to think that all Beaujolais should be drunk young when in fact the crus benefit from ageing, particularly Morgon which has substantial structure in youth and needs a bit of time to soften. Christophe Savoye’s 2012 is just moving towards the delicious pinoté stage when Gamay morphs into a Pinot minime, rich and evolving, with tarry black fruit on the palate and some farmyard notes behind.
