Villa de Corullón, Descendientes de J Palacios, Bierzo 2016

Red | Spain | Bierzo | 13.5% | Full-bodied red

Álvaro Palacios' family roots are firmly in Rioja but the steep slopes of Bierzo in the far north west of Spain, with their poor soils and Mencía vines lured him and his nephew, Ricardo Perez, to investigate the potential. Production here is just 24 hl/ ha, tiny by most standards but one of the more prolific in the Palacios armoury.

A nose of sweet, sappy black fruits, a hint of mulberry, and a distant grilled note leading to a palate of sweet black fruits, very primary yet very approachable, with supple tannins behind and a lovely ripe finish. Simple pleasure.

Drink 2018 – 2024

89% Mencía, 2% red grapes (Alicante Bouchet, Gran Negro, Pan y Carne, Negreda), 9% white grapes (Valenciana, Jerez, Godello).
