Badilante, IGT Toscana, Podere 414, Simone Castelli, Italy 2016

Red | Italy | Tuscany | 14% | Full-bodied red

The Maremma was marshland complete with malaria until it was drained in the early Twentieth Century; once drained, itinerant workers broke the virgin soil using spades called badili, and they themselves were the badilanti, and it is their hard work that Simone Castelli pays homage to in the name of his new wine. Essentially a mini-Morellino, made from Sangiovese, it spends around 18 months initially in large barrels and then cement.

The nose opens out to Morello cherry, juicy and alluring, with a palate of spiced, layered black fruits with a lovely savoury kick.
