Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata, Rocche Costamagna 2015

Red | Italy | Piemonte | 14% | Full-bodied red

Reputed as Italy’s answer to Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo can be every bit as tricky a grape to handle but, in the right hands, can produce some particularly silky offerings. Alessandro Locatelli has it well under control, making wines with a beautiful balance between flavour and power. Locatelli runs the family firm Rocche Costamagna, a 14 hectare estate based in La Morra, a zone with four cru status zones, one of which is Rocche dell'Annunziata, of which Costamagna have some 3 hectares at the top of the slopes. 2015 is one of those years where everything fell seamlessly into place – rarely does Barolo give its growers such an easy ride.

Hints of almond essence and almond patisserie on the nose with distant floral notes. Black fruits on the palate, again floral with hints of fresh roses, some crème patissière, with fine, supple but substantial tannins behind, sweet yet tart, beautifully mouth-watering, with a finish which grows and sweetens, leaving a memory of black cherry and peach kernel.
