Barolo, Rocche Costamagna 2015

Red | Italy | Piemonte | 14% | Full-bodied red

Not for nothing is Piedmont known as Italy’s answer to Burgundy: myriad small vineyards with tiny but important soil and microclimate differences lead to a wealth of different styles of Barolo and Barbaresco, all produced in tiny quantities by small, artisan producers. Alessandro Locatelli is one such producer, making wines with a beautiful balance between flavour and power. 2015 is one of those years where everything fell seamlessly into place, with growers commenting that you had to try hard to get it wrong – rarely does Barolo give its growers such an easy ride.

Tarry black fruits and spiced pruney notes on the nose, violets and hints of leather in the background. Cool black fruit on the palate, it starts reserved and then blossoms into broader, restrained black stone-fruit; sloe, prune with some exotic spice. This is a focused and concentrated wine, sweet, tight with great depth on the finish.

From plots in Verduno and La Morra; 24 months in Slavonian oak, followed by a year in bottle prior to release.
