Château Beauchêne Premier Terroir, Côtes du Rhône 2016

Red | France | Rhône | 14.5 | Full-bodied red

Depending on which story you buy into – either that this was the first vineyard bought by the family or that old man Bernard refused to allow the busybodies setting up the Châteauneuf du Pape Appellation Contrôlée onto his land – it doesn’t alter the fact that Beauchêne’s Premier Terroir punches way above its label. We have yet to come across a wine to rival it.

Grenache-dominated; dense, intense, tarry and smoky, this will drink well in the next few years but will also last, given half a chance, for a good five years or more.

"a 'baby' Châteauneuf with lots of garriguey, animal scents and savoury intensity on the palate." Harry Eyres, Country Life, October 2019

"Powerful, concentrated, aromatic and richly savoury with herb, roast meat, dark plum, black olive and dark chocolate flavours. Close your eyes and you could imagine you were drinking a robust, young, Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Not surprising when you know that the vines – Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre – are 30-100 years old and growing in the same ‘galets’ (large pebble) soils as Châteauneuf." December 2019, Joanna Simon -
