Château Angludet, Margaux 2018
With an average yield of just 10 hl/ha, Angludet is made from 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 18% Petit Verdot in 2018 and availability is severely limited. It will only be available in six bottle cases this year. Deeply coloured with a nose of intense black cherry and dark skinned fruit; smooth black fruit on the palate with fine, silky tannins in support, going to a long, satisfying finish. Drink 2024-2035

6 £156
Blason d'Issan, Margaux 2018
A true second wine in that it comes from young vines planted alongside older ones within the d’Issan Clos. Dense red black with very pretty floral fruit on the nose, rich and creamy, very alluring, some spice and tar too, really attractive; on the palate sweet creamed red and black fruits, really pretty and intense, with delicious light grilled notes; very definitely red fruits, so disgracefully gorgeous at this stage. Drink 2024-2030

12 £230
Château Brane Cantenac, 2ème Cru Classé Margaux 2018
Deep red black, semi-opaque with a nose of lovely spiced black fruits, warm but not cooked, some red fruits too, very fresh and vibrant, leading to a palate of equally delicious red and black fruit, racy and fresh with big ripe tannins behind, going to a lovely smooth, bright, red berry finish. Really fine. Drink 2026-2037

12 £623
Château Giscours, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux 2018
Deep red black, semi-opaque with a very tight nose of mineral, smoky black fruits, stony too, leading to a palate of big ripe black fruits, verging on over-ripe, with grilled blackberry and mulberry notes and big supple tannins behind, going to a long finish which then evolves and freshens on the end.Drink 2026-2037

12 £546
Château d'Issan, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux 2018
Deep dark red black with dense black skinned fruits on the nose, slightly soured with some floral notes and perfume too, leading to a palate of smooth black fruit, really intense and vibrant, deliciously rich with huge ripe tannins behind, savoury with a saline hint going to a finish of ripe red fruits, ripe tannins, with lovely length and depth. A real breath of fresh air! Drink 2027-2037

12 £564
Château Kirwan, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux 2018
Deep black in colour with a nose of primary blackcurrant fruit, warm yet fresh and sappy too, leading to a palate full of primary fruit, big spicy oak notes, vibrant, with supple tannins and well reined in alcohol going to a toasty and alluring finish, long and balanced. Drink 2025 - 2036

12 £408
Château Labegorce, Margaux 2018
Dense purple black to the rim with a nose of oaky smoky toasty black fruit and new wood, deceptively alluring, with a palate of lots of juicy black fruit overlaid with toasty oak, with substantial, more intrusive tannins, nicely extracted and gong to a long, toasty, floral finish. Not hugely complex but will give lots of pleasure in the medium term. Drink 2024-2035

12 £265
Château Palmer, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux 2018
Just 11 hectolitres per hectare as opposed to normal 35+; no Alter Ego as a result of both the small harvest and the black fruit style. Palmer are pleased with the resulting concentration and style, and have set a Château record for their tannin index (IPT). Deep black fruit on the nose with some grilled notes behind, tight and mineral with warmed black fruits behind, perfumed and fresh, with some light savoury and leafy notes and a hint of spice, leading to a grilled yet super-fresh black fruit palate with substantial, very supple tannins behind, perfumed, long and intense with super ripe tannins on the gorgeous finish. Disgracefully approachable yet with the wherewithal to last. Drink 2028-2037

6 £1,441
Château Rauzan Gassies, 2ème Cru Classé Margaux 2018
Deep red black, not opaque, with a nose of smoky black fruits, reduced at this stage with some blackcurrant and floral notes which come through on swirling; on the palate big black fruit, with substantial tannins, soft initially and then firms up with sweet, creamy ripe fruit, with reined-in alcohol, going to a long, fresh finish. Good effort. Drink 2025-2036

12 £470
Chateau Rauzan Ségla, 2ème Cru Classe Margaux 2018
Deep dark purple black, really intense, opaque, with a nose of tight stony black fruit, fresh yet ripe too with some creamed, almost leafy, notes behind, really alluring with a distant hint of spice. Rich, intense black fruit on the palate, really superb, powerful yet elegant, layered, spiced and pure, totally different in texture to other wines but deliciously pure (Château Margaux feels linear in comparison); with wild black fruits, supple tannins and a long fruited finish. Wow! Drink 2030-2042+
