Château Clerc Milon, Pauillac 2018
Dense black red, vibrantly clear with a nose of dark, fresh fruit, black cherries, creamed, juicily rich and alluring leading to a palate of smooth black fruit, hints of graphite and dark chocolate, rich, big but supple tannins, sweet and ripe with briary fruit and a savoury twist. Lovely wine. Drink 2027-2037

6 £365
Château Duhart Milon, 4ème Cru Classé Pauillac 2018
65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot. Dense red black right to the rim with a nose of wild black forest fruits and blackcurrants, really explosive with some mineral notes too; big and smooth on the palate, rich and intense, ripe with substantial tannins, with primary grilled notes behind, well-structured with good intensity and taut fruits on the finish. Drink 2026-2036

6 £330
Château Grand Puy Lacoste, 5ème Cru Classé, Pauillac 2018
The 40th Anniversary of Xavier Borie’s investment and involvement with Grand Puy Lacoste, and a fitting wine with which to celebrate. Deep, dense red black to the rim, not opaque, with a nose of cool blackcurrant fruit and so much fresher than many other wines in 2018. Huge, dense black fruits on the palate, smooth on entry, really intense but with substantial ripe tannins behind, spiced and savoury yet fresh and racy too going to a deliciously persistent finish. Really good wine, beautifully well done. Drink 2026-2035+

12 £672
Château Haut Batailley, 5ème Cru Classé, Pauillac 2018
59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 60% new wood; from a 20 hectare vineyard, 40 year old vines, with another 17 hectares planted over the past couple of years, including some Petit Verdot. Deep purple black right to the rim, opaque with a truly stunning nose, perfumed, rich, intense, with leafy black skinned fruit behind, sloe and Morello cherry, with some sweet black cherry notes; on the palate deliciously ripe black fruit, super smooth with tension to balance, underscored by delicious ripe tannins, supple and fresh, going to a finish which starts quietly and builds to a crescendo. Very different to Haut Batailley of old, but truly delicious too. Drink 2026-2034

12 £525
Lacoste Borie, Pauillac 2018
35% of the crop went into Lacoste Borie, with the balance going to the grand vin thanks to higher investment in parcel-specific vats for the second wine, which is helping to raise the game. Deep purple black to the rim, not opaque, with a nose of leafy blackcurrant fruit, creamed and really powerful with intense black fruits on the palate, structured and substantial, going to a deliciously intense, creamed floral finish underscored by smooth ripe tannins. This is a wine for the longer term, punching way above its weight. Drink 2024-2030+

12 £228
Pichon Comtesse Réserve, Pauillac 2018
53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc. Dense red black with a nose of spiced black fruits, really inky and focused, savoury and spiced, beautifully concentrated. On the palate, deliciously perfumed Petit Verdot notes, layered and rich, intense, pretty with floral notes going to an intense, smooth, crunchy finish. A real success. Drink 2024-2030+

12 £402
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, 2ème Cru Classé Pauillac 2018
Dense purple black right to the rim with a nose of stunning black fruits, spicy and rich, layered and creamed too, intense with lots going on, briary and concentrated, leading to a rich, densely fruited palate, smoky and pure with super-ripe tannins behind, intense, layered and deliciously powerful with a rich, long, supremely elegant finish. Drink 2028-2040

6 £828
Château Pontet Canet, 5ème Cru Classé Pauillac 2018
A scant 8 hl/ha here, with mildew accounting for two thirds of the lost crop; owner Alfred Tesseron stoically maintained that it wasn’t about quantity but quality, saying they did ‘what is important for the wine’. Deep dense dark right to the rim with a nose of plummily dark fruit, some port notes, spiced, rich, dense, with notes of mulberries and damsons, dark and brooding, leading to a palate of concentrated black fruit on entry, again spiced and really intense, mineral yet savoury too with some black olive notes, sweet and concentrated; The finish starts at low volume but then ramps it up with immense fruit behind the supple, ripe tannins. Really big and impressive. Drink 2027-2036
