For many years Morellino was considered an adjunct to Tuscany as it lies outside the main growing areas of Chianti and Brunello, but it has proved to be a stayer. Simone Castelli’s Podere 414 is a blend of the Morellino clone of Sangiovese with a small amount of Ciliegiolo, Colorino, Alicante and Syrah, and it’s a stunner. The label for Podere 414’s Morellino di Scansano changes every year, making this a fun collector’s item. Each label has a detail picked out in the ruby red of the wine, with the 2023 label depicting angels harvesting in the vineyard.
