Our customers talk about the benefit of going straight through to someone with impeccable wine knowledge, congratulate us on how quickly we respond to enquiries and queries, comment that they like the fact that our drinking range is tightly focused, so they aren’t forced to wade through hundreds of wines to find one that suits their palates and pockets, and they enjoy our approachable, informed but informal style of communication.
We are a group of individuals who started our careers in an era when personal relationships with both suppliers and customers were important; when personal contact with customers and a bespoke service were the keys to success and long before mass mail shots, impersonal e-mail and “corporate communications” became the order of the day. So, whilst we have embraced all the benefits of modern technology, we have also retained the old-fashioned values that we believe are the cornerstones of building a successful business and if, at any time, you feel that our service falls short of the standards which we aspire to, we hope that you will tell us.
Between us we have clocked up over 160 years of experience, building our careers and knowledge in a range of companies, from the high street to The Queen’s wine merchant and travelled the four corners of the globe, in pursuit of the great wines of the world and meeting international customers. We have been privileged to work with some of the greats of the wine world and to supply collectors with breath-taking collections. This knowledge gives us a great foundation in our endeavour to spot the greats of the future and we are continually enhancing our every day drinking range so that each and each wine on our list represents the best value possible, without compromise.
We don’t rest on our laurels however and if there are wines which don’t meet with your approval, we guarantee to refund you without question or delay and, equally, we are delighted if suppliers, customers and friends come across wines on their travels which they recommend to us. All suggestions are gratefully received and followed up and a number of leads have already led to the inclusion of some superb wines in our portfolio.
Why Buy From Private Cellar?
When we set up Private Cellar in 2005, we were one of a clutch of new wine businesses on the block and we set out to really excel at what we do. Quality of wines, honesty and excellent customer service were our top priority and they continue to be the cornerstones of our business. We are proud of what we have achieved but we don’t want to rest on our laurels and hope that you will continue to tell us where we can improve as we embark on the next decade of Private Cellar’s history. If you like what you see, please continue to browse our wines online and don’t hesitate to call us on 01353 721 999 and ask for a copy of our wine list.
OUR TEAM: The Private Cellar team know their stuff and we can’t hide our enthusiasm for our range of wines. We have all been immersed in the wine trade for longer than we care to admit but we are not wine anoraks and are well aware that there are only so many people in the world who are interested in an in-depth conversation about malolactic fermentation… Our collective wine trade involvement spans back much further than the existence of Private Cellar and our combined 180 years of expertise in sourcing, selling and storing wine comes from long-established careers in the UK and overseas trade. We genuinely love what we do! Whether we are matching food and wine for a wedding, sourcing a gift for a christening, ruining our teeth at the en primeur tastings, shivering in cold cellars or hosting tastings around the world, we truly enjoy what we do.
OUR WINES: Rather than buying to a formula of price points and volumes, we only buy wines that we personally rate and which we are proud to sell (and drink at home ourselves). The criteria for selection is purely based on a price:quality ratio. If that doesn’t stack up, the wine does not make the Private Cellar Selection. In addition to this, we have a constantly evolving Fine Wine List, which is sourced mainly from our customers’ own collections. The beauty of this system is that we have first-hand knowledge of provenance and storage conditions – the most important elements of secondary market fine wine trading. Our wines are stored in perfect conditions at Vinothèque and we take great care in looking after our customers’ collections.
THE PRIVATE CELLAR EXPERIENCE: We really do offer a personal wine service. It’s an easy claim to make but our recommendations are made with the genuine motive of providing drinking pleasure for you, the customer, not because there is a pile of stock which needs to be shifted. We don’t have call centres or a central switchboard – we prefer to answer the phone ourselves and engage with you to make sure that we can help you discover new wines and enjoy old favourites. We hold regular dinners and tastings and nothing gives us more pleasure than introducing our customers to our wine growers. Private Cellar is nothing without our customers, suppliers and staff and we continually invest in these relationships whether in the warehouse, at the winery, on the phone or at a Private Cellar event. Our company was founded on friendship and we are thrilled that so many of you, customers and suppliers alike, have become genuine friends too.
THE WINE JOURNEY: We have a lot of fun sharing our wine knowledge with our customers, whether in a formal classroom setting at a tutored tasting or over dinner, joined by our wine growers from around the world. We continue to learn too, as new wines, appellations and styles emerge. Our wines are sourced by Buying Director, Nicola Arcedeckne-Butler MW, one of only 382 Masters of Wine in the World and Nicola often leads our tastings and events, sharing her knowledge, garnered throughout her wide-ranging career in the wine trade.
