Don't just take our word for it! Here are some of the great reviews that Private Cellar's wines have been enjoying recently. Scroll down to select wines for your basket.
"Private Cellar has a small, focused and very experienced team that offers a very personal level of service and can help with laying down wine for godchildren (apparently a very popular service), portfolio management, wedding lists and tastings." - Victoria Moore
“I’ve long been a fan of Private Cellar for relatively straightforward reasons. As a smallish independent they are free of the pressures to list wines either in vast quantities or from specific areas. Instead, they have an MW buyer with a flawless palate and can pick out the better-value wines, often made by from capable producers in smaller quantities outside the obvious trophy-priced delineations … I think that, if I were ever to give up the wine reviewing and go back to buying wines to consume, I would probably put a repeat order in with Laura Taylor to keep sending me interesting stuff (Laura, a co-founder who heads up Marketing, is also a trainee MW).” Tom Lewis, The Cambridge Wine Blogger
Jardins, Château Mauvesin Barton, Bordeaux 2024
"This 100 per cent Merlot is designed for easy-going al fresco/picnic drinking, with maximum, juicy hedgerow fruit and minimum tannins. It’s utterly charming and could have been made especially with this moreish muffuletta in mind." Jonathan Ray, The Spectator - recommended to pair with chef Olivia Potts' muffuletta recipe.
“A plummy, silky-tannin claret made from almost 50-year-old merlot.” Jane MacQuitty
Private Cellar’s House White Burgundy, Cave de Buxy 2024
“Private Cellar’s House White Burgundy 2024, France is also very attractive; in the fresher style, saline and clear.”
Victoria Moore.
Château Picque Caillou Blanc, Pessac-Léognan 2022
“A particularly fine example of the dry white style, combining breadth and finesse with notes of elderflower, cooked grapefruit, citrus and salinity, all underpinned by a wonderfully precise sense of place. A friend tasted this and immediately longed for oysters. I wanted roast chicken with deeply caramelised, crisp skin, roast potatoes cooked the same way, and a big green salad made with proper lettuce, not bagged leaves, dressed with a simple vinaigrette.” Victoria Moore.
Vico dell' Amore Greco di Tufo DOCG, Nativ 2024
“It was an Italian white from Private Cellar a few years ago that first got me properly into Italian whites. The narrative arc of Italy’s white wine production in recent decades starts with a much-needed clean-up in response to the technical precision of the New World, resulting in neutral-to-super-neutral whites that finally re-gained some of the personality that had been 'lost in the wash’” Tom Lewis, The Cambridge Wine Blogger.
Château Julia Assyrtiko, Drama 2025
“Aged on its lees for six months after fermentation in a combination of stainless steel, oak and concrete tanks, it has a soft-focus smoky, stony character under luminous floral, camomile tea and lime-zest fruit and a lees-enriched creamy texture cut with pithy citrus zing.” - Joanna Simon. Read Joanna Simon's Wine of the Week article.
Château Julia Assyrtiko, Drama 2024
“Château Julia Assyrtiko, Drama 2024, Greece is one of Private Cellar’s bestsellers and also one of my own longstanding favourites. White and crisp but with good weight and notes of lemon curd and intense lemon pith, it comes from the region of Drama, on the mainland; try it if you like Gavi” Victoria Moore.
“citrus and white pepper, pure precise and linear, Very Good” Tom Lewis.
Château Julia Agiorgitiko, Drama 2023
“Pale ruby, fresh plush and supple with cherries, earth and coffee grounds, Very Good” Tom Lewis.
Château Tayet, Cuvée Prestige, Bordeaux Supérieur 2018
“Really ‘claretty’ mature claret with ripeness, cedary depths, velvet tannins and gravelly graphite notes. Merlot-led, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, this is aged in oak for a year and is the sort of wine that gives affordable Bordeaux a good name.” Joanna Simon.
“Mature and a little gamey then sweet with some dry tannins on the end. But it’s not a bad price for a seven-year-old wine with character.” Jancis Robinson.
Picpoul de Pinet, Cave de Florensac 2024
"Golden sandy yellow; tropical citrus, white flowers and white pepper; crisp, fresh and saline with ripe white stone and orchard fruits, lemongrass, sherbet, zippy lime marmalade and brazil nut leesy savouriness; rich, complex and elegant." Tom Lewis, via Substack (2022 Vintage).
Rijk's Touch Pinotage, Tulbagh 2020
“An absolutely delicious, firm, meaty coffee bean-scented Pinotage from a boutique winery in Tulbagh.” - Jane MacQuitty.
“This shows just how far this once-derided grape variety has come. Once infamously redolent of burnt rubber, here Adriaan has coaxed it into a gloriously juicy, jammy incarnation, full of blackberries and vanilla complete with an appetisingly savoury finish. It’s a joy.” - Jonathan Ray, The Spectator.
Aristea Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch 2019
"This is similarly succulent. Aristea doesn’t own any vineyards of its own but sources from the finest sites with the greatest care. Twelfth-generation winemaker Matt K is famously fastidious, homing in not just on the best vineyards but on the best row of vines within said vineyards. With juicy, soft blackcurrant fruit, this is drinkability incarnate." Jonathan Ray, The Spectator.
Albariño Robaliño, Señorío de Rubiós, Orixe Rías Baixas 2024
”Lifted citrus, orchard fruits, and white pepper. Good+” Tom Lewis.
Champagne Brut Nature, Henri Chauvet NV
"A very attractive champagne from a family-run domaine, this is actually a blanc de noirs, made with 90 per cent pinot noir and 10 per cent pinot meunier. Very dry, lovely and toasty and with a hint of black cherries." Victoria Moore.
"We had a tasting of Henri Chauvet’s champagnes at the Spectator a year or so ago and readers positively hoovered them up. The domaine was founded in 1840 and third generation Damien and Mathilde Chauvet today specialise in traditional, artisanal champagne (they still riddle all their bottles by hand) noted for long ageing on the lees. This bone-dry fizz was added to the range last year and is a glorious example of so-called zero dosage or Brut zero champagne, being fresher, fuller and creamier than most. It’s a beauty." Jonathan Ray, Spectator Life.
“Henri Chauvet is a top-class grower champagne, making very pure, crisp wines from eight hectares in Rilly la Montagne, a premier cru village near Reims. Today it is owned and run by winemaker Damien Chauvet, the fourth generation of the same family, and his wife Mathilde. Serious, mineral, bright, so pure, linear and refreshing. Plum, apple, apple pips and perfume. Great energy. This is 70% pinot noir and 30% pinot meunier, and the fruit definitely didn’t need any added sugar. A blend of 2020 and 2021. Just so enjoyable.” Will Smale on Instagram @willsmale1.
Valserrano Rioja Blanco, Bodegas de la Marquesa 2024
“White Rioja is still a bit of an unknown to many wine drinkers, which is not so surprising when you consider that white grape varieties account for less than 10 per cent of the region’s vineyards, but Rioja Blanco sales are rising as consumers around the world switch from red wines to white” Joanna Simon www.joannasimon.com.
Viognier, Domaine de Montmarin, IGT Côtes de Thongue - Organic (Screwcap closure)
“Domaine de Montmarin Viognier 2025 Côtes de Thongue, France is the garden viognier of dreams: floaty and apricotty with a subtly saline edge so it still feels refreshing.” Victoria Moore.
Nebbiolo Langhe Roccardo, Rocche Costamagna 2023
“Cantina Rocche Costamagna ‘Roccardo’ Langhe Nebbiolo 2023 Piedmont, Italy. Very classical in style, which I love. Pinprick tannins, dried roses, narrow but opens beautifully.” Victoria Moore.
Grüner Veltliner Wagram, Weingut Mehofer (Screwcap closure) 2024
“Aromatic and citrussy, Good+” Tom Lewis.
Grüner Veltliner Neudegg, Weingut Mehofer - Organic 2023
“More complex and mineral Very Good” Tom Lewis.
Zweigelt Neudegg, Weingut Mehofer - Organic 2021
“Pale, cherries and earth, fresh and elegant Good+” Tom Lewis.
Pinot Noir Neudegg, Weingut Mehofer (organic) 2022
“Pale, fresh, supple cherries and earth, lovely texture Very Good.” Tom Lewis.
Pinuaga Rosé, Tierra de Castilla - Organic 2025
“Bright crimson, strawberry bubblegum, red berries, orchard fruits and citrus, Good+” Tom Lewis.
Pinuaga Nature, IGP Tierra de Castilla - Organic 2023
“Deep ruby, red fruits and spice, concentrated and intense, sleek and rounded. Good+.” Tom Lewis.
Pinuaga 200 Cepas, IGP Tierra de Castilla - Organic 2022
“100% Cencibel, this is fresh, stoney and well made with subtle 10% new oak. Typical blueberry and brambly fruit leads to an appealing, steely finish. Well structured and built to evolve in bottle. Drink 2026 – 2032” – Tim Atkin’s Discover Spain Report 2026
“Ruby, red fruits, plush and supple with sleek-yet-firm tannins, Very Good” Tom Lewis.
Terroir Selection Chenel, Springfontein, WO Springfontein Rim 2023
“Pale gold hybrid grape, complex, citrussy and floral with microherbs, orchard fruits and fresh mint; saline and savoury, Very Good” Tom Lewis.
“Citrussy, herby, fresh melon, orchard and stone fruits, poised and precise, savoury, oatmealy texture, Very Good” Tom Lewis.
Terroir Selection Pinotage, Springfontein, WO Springfontein Rim - Organic (Screwcap closure) 2022
“Ruby, fresh red fruits and grilled smoky bacon, savoury and complex, plush and harmonious, Good+” Tom Lewis.
Jonathans Ridge Pinotage, Springfontein 2022
“Deep ruby, red and black fruits, smoky-toasty with oaky spice and grilled bacon; plush, concentrated and fresh with rounded, sleek tannins. Good+” Tom Lewis.
Château du Puy Faure, Bordeaux Supérieur 2018
“A classic elegant, mature Bordeaux. Interestingly made in stainless steel with staves rather than in barrels which preserves its freshness - and keeps the price down.” Fiona Beckett
La Picossa Garnatxa Blanca, Roqueta Origen, Terra Alta 2025
“A really well-priced, lush rich-textured white you might possibly be able to get your hands on in time for our Spanish tasting on Sunday evening.” Fiona Beckett
