Bourgogne Rouge Côte d’Or, Domaine Joseph Roty 2023

Red | France | Burgundy | 13.5% | Full-bodied red

Deep limpid red-black to the rim with a nose of sappy, floral dark fruit, a light touch of oak, really attractive with blackberry and violet notes and a light savoury touch leading to a palate of substantial black fruit with crunchy tannins, very concentrated for the humble Côte d’Or label, juicy with plenty going on and leading to a lovely spiced, mineral finish with a light, refreshing crunch. Drink 2026 - 2034

12 ouvrées across two parcels in Champs Forey in the heart of Marsannay, which are to be reclassified as Marsannay in due course.

The Domaine has 15 hectares of vines in total, split almost evenly between the communes of Gevrey Chambertin and Marsannay, predominantly planted to Pinot Noir with small amounts of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and, from 2022, Aligoté. Farming here combines organic and biodynamic principles (particularly with regard for lunar phases for vineyard work and cellar operations) but the Domaine is certified for neither – Pierre-Jean Roty says they follow what they know works rather than adopting new trends.
