Bordeaux Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix
For us at Private Cellar, a visit to the offices of Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix during a Bordeaux buying trip is always a highlight. Here we find our baseline, the real heartbeat of Pomerol and St Emilion and the true expression of any vintage. This allows us to evaluate other producers’ wines against a known measure, one where the vineyard and the vintage are allowed equal prominence, not necessarily the case elsewhere.
The Right Bank of Bordeaux has been home to the Ets Jean-Pierre Moueix empire since 1937, founded by the eponymous Jean-Pierre. The now third generation family business - both wine merchants and producers - count the likes of Château Bélair Monange, a St Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé and Château La Fleur-Pétrus, Pomerol, among their enviable portfolio of properties.
Christian Moueix's expansion of the business oversees included the purchase of the Dominus Estate in Napa Valley, California in 1982, and the Ulysses Vineyard in 2008. Edouard Moueix, Christian’s son, joined his father in 2003, helping to develop Autres Rivages, a distributor of Left Bank and California wines around the world.
Alongside the flagship wines, Jean-Pierre Moueix made it his mission to offer enjoyable, good value wines that properly demonstrate a sense of place; and the family continue to do so with their range of house wines from Bordeaux, St Emilion and Pomerol. Staples of our wine list from the very beginning, these are wines that showcase the very essence of their appellations.
What Christian and Edouard Moueix don’t know about Pomerol probably isn’t worth worrying about, and their house Pomerol ticks all the right boxes. We also chose one of these benchmark wines as our ‘house’ St Emilion to celebrate our tenth year anniversary – we could not have turned to anyone else for such a classic.
We also offer a selection of their flagship wines, both on our list and annually en primeur, including Château Puy Blanquet, Château Pindefleurs, Château Bélair Monange, Château Certan de May, Château Hosanna and Château La Fleur Pétrus.
