Burgundy Domaine Rossignol-Trapet

Domaines in Burgundy are forever carved up as a result of the archaic inheritance laws and Rossignol-Trapet is one such example, formed when the brothers-in-law who co-owned Domaine Trapet retired in 1990, splitting the estate to form Domaine Jean Trapet and Domaine Rossignol-Trapet, based in Gevrey Chambertin in the Northern Côtes de Nuits.

Vineyards and Vinification

Over the 20 plus years our buyer and MW, Nicola Arcdeckne-Butler, has been visiting Rossignol-Trapet, the cellar and chai remain unchanged, perhaps the occasional new stainless steel tank installed but to all intents and purposes the same place as ever. However over that period they have moved into being fully biodynamic, both in the vineyard and cellar, and have changed their methods on both racking (now never done before bottling, previously done systematically) and whole bunch fermentation, which varies according to vineyard and vintage characteristics. It makes for very tranquil tastings, where the latest innovation – or re-introduction of old practices, in the case of whole bunch fermentation – can be assessed and, more importantly, its impact better understood by us.

Domaine Rossignol-Trapet produces wines across the Bourgogne, Beaune, Chapelle Chambertin, Chambertin, Gevrey Chambertin, Latricières Chambertin and Savigny les Beaune appellations, including six premier cru single vineyard sites. Recently, they have begun to offer these single vineyards separately.

Wines

Biodynamic and organic conversion completed, the wines are now both pure and astonishingly fresh. This a Domaine which has improved dramatically and offers excellent value for money. Nicolas Rossignol describes his wines as ‘vins gourmands’, with medium to low acidity levels and wonderful layers of aromatics. Purity of fruit and freshness are the trademarks here.

We offer Domaine Rossignol-Trapet’s wines every year en primeur and they fly off the metaphorical shelves almost immediately. We also list their Gevrey Chambertin Vielles Vignes, from vines aged between 50 and 80 years old, a touch of the Rossignol-Trapet magic at an affordable price.
