Burgundy Seguin-Manuel

Savigny-lès-Beaune is the heart and headquarters of Seguin-Manuel, but since 2005 Thibaut Marion’s burgeoning new empire has expanded to include parcels in Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet, Pommard, Meursault and Vosne-Romanée, from Grand Crus to village wines. He now works over 8 hectares of vines across these appellations; all farmed organically, with their certified status guaranteed in time for the 2015 vintage.

Thibaut Marion set up his own négociant house at exactly the moment that Burgundy began to suffer from short harvest, making it a particularly tough task for him to keep his new customers in the right wine all year round. Happily, he has made it and, like the rest of the Côte d’Or, is now luxuriating in two bumper vintages in a row with 2017 and 2018.  Thibaut is keen to help his growing customer base navigate the mire of the Burgundian price structures and has kept his prices static for the third year running, despite having to pay an average of 10% more where he buys in fruit, so these wines represent excellent value for money.

A believer in minimal-intervention wine making – he has even reduced his sulphur use by over 50% in the last couple of vintages - Thibaut believes good practice in the vineyard speaks volumes in the final product, and we couldn’t agree more when it comes to his wines.

The fruit for Seguin-Manuel’s Bourgogne Chardonnay is chosen very carefully, looking to make a wine which is approachable early but which at the same time isn’t going to fall apart in a short amount of time. All grapes are hand-picked, and for the chardonnay the wine is partly fermented and then matured in oak casks for 10 months.

Savigny-lès-Beaune, where Thibaut bought his first vines when setting up on his own, produces the grapes for his Savigny-lès-Beaune Vieilles Vignes, from vines over 60 years old. The grapes are sorted before fermentation in wooden vats for just over a fortnight, and the wine is then matured in oak barrels (15% new) for 14 months.

Find the above two wines on our list and check our website for a few other Seguin-Manuel gems. We also offer Thibaut’s wines En Primeur in the early spring each year.
