Burgundy Domaine Faiveley

Domaine Faiveley as we know it today was founded by Pierre Faiveley as a merchant business in Nuits St Georges in 1825, named after his then two year old son Joseph. The first vines were purchased in Nuits St Georges Tribourg in 1831 and since then the family domaine has expanded to over 125 hectares. Stretching from the Côte de Nuits to the Côte Chalonnaise and taking in 8 monopole vineyards (owned by them exclusively) along the way, Domaine Faiveley is one of the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy.

Made up of a patchwork of small parcels of some of the most prestigious crus in Burgundy, Faiveley makes 80% of its wines with fruit from the family’s vineyards. The Faiveley family has also stayed true to its merchant roots, forming close relationships with a number of like-minded Burgundian families from which the grapes for their Joseph Faiveley wines come. From the very start the family concentrated on buying premium land and they now boast an enviable portfolio, holding tiny slithers in the grand crus of Corton, Corton-Charlemagne, Mazis-Chambertin, Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Latricières-Chambertin, Musigny, Echézeaux and Clos Vougeot. Their flagship monopole, Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley is known for its power, structure and minerality. More recently, Erwan’s agenda of buying only the best new vineyards has led to purchases being made in the Grand Cru sites of Bienvenues Bâtard Montranchet and Bâtard Montrachet. A veritable Burgundian empire.

Domaine Faiveley also have a particularly close relationship with the Côte Chalonnaise and the Mercurey vineyards. As well as parcels in Rully, Givry and Montagny, they own three monopoles in Mercurey, including La Framboisière – which literally means ‘raspberry bush’. No prizes for guessing the tasting notes for this particular wine.

Erwan Faiveley is currently one of the youngest directors of a Burgundy Domaine on record, and as the 7th generation at the helm of the business, has invested in brand new facilities, including the incredible barrel hall in Nuits St Georges, which we were lucky enough to visit on one of our Tour of the Terroirs car trips around France. With one eye on preserving the family estates for future generations, and as the ‘Climats de Bourgogne’ are Unesco World Heritage Sites, every effort has been made to preserve all estate buildings in keeping with their original designs. With the help of local craftsmen and locally sourced materials, Domaine Faiveley have restored many of the original winery buildings and sites.

We offer Domaine Faiveley wines en primeur each winter, and although they may be one of the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, the wine produced from each climat is very limited.
