Essex Tuffon Hall

The English wine scene is growing increasingly popular over the years and for those interested in trying out the local stuff, the wines from Tuffon Hall are certainly ones to add to your collection. The owners of Tuffon Hall are the Crowther family. A self-described family of ‘grafters and crafters’, the Crowther’s have been producing award winning wines since 2014 having introduced vines to their family farm in East Anglia in 2011. The family know the land well with four generations having worked it for over 100 years.

Vinification

Last year harvest was late (mid-October) at Tuffon Hall due to lack of sunshine in August pushing everything back by 4 weeks. The grapes are monitored closely in the run up to harvest and a ‘refractometer’ is used daily to measure the amount of sugar in the grape juice. When they are happy that the grapes are at their peak it’s all hands-on deck. Picking day is an intense event at and everybody lends a hand to get the grapes in in one day. They hand harvest the grapes, one variety at a time and ensure the freshly picked grapes get down to the winery ready for pressing on the same day.

Wines

Whilst championing Bacchus and hoping to get an appellation for it they also grow Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Family is at the heart of everything they do and their wines bear the names of their daughters Amelie, Beatrice and Charlotte.

Angus and Pod Crowther pride themselves on producing a limited release of award-winning wines of the highest standard “which keeps our ever-growing family of English wine lovers very happy.” -.
