Burgundy Domaine Rois Mages

In the early 1980s, Anne Sophie Debavelaere and her husband decided to settle down in the Burgundy region after falling in love with the landscape and vineyards. After a lucky encounter, they had the opportunity to buy a plot in the village of Rully in 1984. Anne Sophie then embarked on the adventure of winemaking, helped by her husband. Over the past few years however, Anne Sophie has been stepping back in favour of her son, Félix, who has recently won the Côte Chalonnaise ‘emerging talent’ winemaker award for the second time.
Vineyards and Vinification
The Domaine now spreads over 11 hectares over the appellations of Rully, Bouzeron in Côte Chalonnaise and Beaune in Côte de Beaune. Domaine Rois Mages has a philosophy which aims at minimal intervention during the wine making process. They have seven different climates for which they adjust their practices accordingly. They strive for purity, elegancy and race, which happen to be their key words. Félix provides a fitting comparison. “Regarding our winemaking, we consider that 80% comes from the vineyard. I like to compare it with cooking. To give an example, if you have the greatest tomatoes from your garden, with just a splash of olive oil and a pinch of salt it is heaven. But with unripe or rotten tomatoes, I wish you good luck in making a wonderful salad, even with the best accompaniment.”– Félix Debavelaere.
Wines
Every single one of the Domaine Rois Mages wines are aged in barrels for 12 months and spend a second winter in stainless steel tanks on their finest lees to gain in complexity. This ensures that their wines are refined and vibrant, often with a strong mineral edge and a pleasant and balanced palate.
