Wagram Mehofer

An old family estate, Weingut Mehofer has been in the village of Neudegg, Austria for over 300 years, during which a deep knowledge of local viticulture has been developed and passed down through 10 generations. The current members upholding this long held family profession are brother and sister producers, Judith and Stephan Mehofer. The siblings continue practices put in place by their parents years ago. For the last 30 years the Mehofer family have been cultivating their vines and vineyards according to the principles of biodynamic agriculture.

Vineyards and Vinification

The early decision to go organic sums up what the Mehofer vineyards are all about. 'Decades ago, our parents introduced the cultivation of the vineyards according to organic-biological guidelines. They were in favour of management that protects people and nature - and is therefore sustainable and ecological. Thanks to this early decision, organic not only determines our work in the cellar and in the vineyard, but our entire life. Organic stands for a philosophy of life that characterizes our everyday life' Stephan Mehofer.

On top of this the families base in the village of Neudegg is the most northerly in the Wagram region and benefits from a slightly higher altitude; Stephan unusually vinifies 2% of his fruit as whole bunches to increase the flavour profile.

Wines

Mehofer offers a range of delicious white wines including the regional Klassik wines which are aimed at easy drinking and made with a conscious effort to keep the alcohol levels low whilst maintaining the full characteristics of the grape.

Their Roter Veltliner Klassik is something to really take notice of. Stephen admits that the Roter grape variety isn’t much fun to grow which may go some way in explaining why it is not as widely grown as its more well-known local rival, Grüner. Tightly controlled yields at Mehofer reduce the potential crop by almost 50% and with careful handling it gets that extra dimension. The Mehofer family have always and continue to put in the extra care required to create wines of quality and philosophy. We at Private Cellar certainly hope that this family will continue to upkeep their wine making traditions for many generations to come.
