Douro Dona Matilde

Dona Matilde is a family owned estate. The property came to the Barros family in 1927, having been purchased by Manoel Moreira de Barros, an already established winemaker who set up the Barros Wine Group. Manoel Moreira de Barros transformed the quinta by planting new vineyards, renovating the house, building extensive gardens and renaming the property Dona Matilde in honour of his wife.
In 2006, the Barros family sold the Barros Group, and with it Dona Matilde. A few months later, Manuel Ângelo Barros, grandson of Manoel Moreira de Barros was unhappy to see the quinta outside of family hands and managed to buy it back. Quinta Dona Matilde returned to the family at the end of 2006.
Vineyards
The Quinta is located on the north bank of the Douro River. It has 28 hectares of quality vineyards which are all classified with the highest ranking by the Douro region register. Quinta Dona Matilde is also an important natural habitat in the Douro. There is a total of 93 hectares large areas of which are occupied by uncultivated land, natural vegetation and 1100 recorded olive trees! With large trees and stone walls, the paths also have orange trees, lemon trees, terraced gardens with hundreds of roses and other fruit bearing trees spread around a vast area of typical Mediterranean vegetation all promoting biodiversity of both plant and animal life in the region.
Wines
Dona Matilde has always had the reputation for good wines though being hard to work due to the steepness of the terrain. The project Quinta Dona Matilde was born in 2007 but with the same terroir and knowledge of generations.
