Tierra de Castilla Bodegas Pinuaga

Bodegas Pinuaga is now run by third generation Esther Pinuaga, a bundle of energy who regularly joins us at our tastings. Esther is continuing the family’s 60 year tradition of organic farming in Toledo Spain, championing indigenous Spanish varieties.

Vineyards and Vinification

Esther and her team at Pinuaga firmly believe in organic and environmentally friendly farming. Their 30 hectares of vines are planted relatively high at 750 to 900m which gives them cooler nights than those on the plains, allowing the fruit some respite from the summer heat. These vineyards are spread over a diverse range of soils, and with their minimal intervention philosophy in the winery, Pinuaga strive for a true expression of terroir in their wines. Each plot is hand harvested at night and fermented in separate tanks to retain the grape’s character even further.

Esther is extremely proud of the work they have undertaken to recover old Cencibel clones planted by her grandfather. Cencibel, an indigenous clone of Tempranillo, makes up the majority of their wines, with Garnacha, Merlot, Macabeo and Sauvignon Blanc also making an appearance.

Wines

Esther’s wines have rightly caught the attention of of Jonathan Ray, wine editor for the Spectator and The Field, who can’t get enough of them, and it has to be said, neither can we! Their Nature is pure Tempranillo from 20 year old vines which spends a few months in two and three year old American and French barrels and has delicious brambly black fruit, juicy and primary with the oak adding depth and breadth. Their flagship wine, Pinuaga ‘200 Cepas’ (or 200 Vines) comes from one vineyard of 45 year old Cencibel bush vines. Only made in exceptional vintages, production is limited to 6,000 bottles. The wine spends just over a year in American and French oak barrels before bottling, after which it spends a further 18 months in the cellar. Incredibly rich, dense, dark and toasty, with a distant hint of liquorice, this has structure, elegance and spice in spades.
