Burgundy Domaine Matrot
Based in Meursault but with vineyards in Puligny, Volnay, Auxey Duresses, Monthélie and Maranges amongst others, Matrot has been a family run domaine for 6 generations.
2016 marked the first full vintage since Adèle and Elsa Matrot, daughters of Thierry and Pascale, took over the running the Domaine, continuing their parents’ reputation for wines of understated elegance and refinement.
Vineyard and Vinification
The Matrot ethos is that wine should be a true expression of both its terroir and vintage and that fine wine is made in the vineyard. Practicing what they preach, their vineyards have been 100% organic since 2000. They use very little new oak, preferring instead longer periods in older barrels to better express the individuality of each vintage and vineyard.
As a rule of thumb, the premier cru whites from Domaine Matrot are closed in youth, opening up from around 8 years plus, and in moderate to good vintages will last for 10-15 years plus. Matrot’s red wines show astonishing purity of fruit and are not blockbusters but extraordinarily elegant expressions of Pinot Noir: pale in colour, gorgeously perfumed and the top wines from Volnay and Blagny will evolve and improve for some 10 years or more. Meursault rouge is a deliciously fresh wine for drinking in the 2-4 year span, whilst the Auxey Duresses rouge requires around 5-8 years to show its best.
