Bourgogne Rouge, Domaine Jean Vaudoisey 2024

Red | France | Burgundy | Full-bodied red

Principally from Volnay, with some fruit from Pommard and Meursault, from vines over 60 years old, with 25% new oak. Deeper in colour than many in this vintage with a nose of brambly dark fruit, with plenty going on. Lovely brambly fruit on the palate with cool tannins behind, spiced, leafy and crunchy with some red flowers, going to a fresh, fruit-infused finish. Less overt than usual, but there is lots to unpack here. Drink 2026 - 2028

Romain and Baptiste Poirrotte, the young proprietors of this old family Domaine, took over the reins in 2015 when they were in their early twenties. They have since instituted many changes, including planting Chardonnay in Monthélie and Volnay, as the soils are so well suited to it. With only one premier cru in Volnay, they have begun to separate out their higher performing lieux dits to mature and bottle separately; last year saw the addition of Volnay Ez Blanches, at the top of the slope above 1er Cru Clos des Chênes, and this year it is the turn of Volnay Les Grand Champs, in the middle of the appellation and immediately below premier cru les Mitans.
