Nuits St Georges Aux Allots, Domaine Bertrand & Axelle Machard de Gramont - Organic 2023

The Machard de Gramont vineyards are all on pretty steep slopes, some with terraces cut in by Bertrand himself, others with old terraces, and they are incredibly hard to work; the mechanical work is usually done by Bertrand himself or Axelle, his daughter, because contractors are not prepared to take the risk with their own machinery. In May 2024, the steering link on Bertrand’s tractor broke, tipping him (and the tractor) onto the terrace below, thankfully throwing him clear. Although badly hurt and in intensive care for some time, he was still working on the sorting table all day, every day, during the 2024 harvest; Axelle, however, will no longer allow him on the tractor! The 2023 season started badly for Axelle, with their organic principles constantly challenged by rain and poor weather in June along with the inevitable mildew attack, but the heatwave saved and made the vintage, and, in Axelle’s opinion, the wines are potentially better than her 2022s, with more texture and layers.
